Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with defending Southern Conference champion Wofford Saturday night on the road but the Spartans were unable to complete the season-series sweep of the Terriers as UNCG dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to Wofford at Snyder Field.
With the loss the Spartans fall into a tie for fourth place in the SoCon standings with East Tennessee State. UNCG will travel to the Buccaneers Tuesday night and can clinch a home game in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament with a victory in the contest as the Spartans would own a tiebreaker against ETSU with the season series sweep.
The Spartans and Terriers combined for 43 total shots in the game with Wofford holding a 24-19 edge in shots. Redshirt sophomore forward Christopher Reingen (Dusseldorf, Germany/Univ. of Dusseldorf) led the Spartans with six shots on the night as eight different players recorded shots in the loss.
Freshman goalkeeper William Pyle (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) posted eight saves in the loss, including some key saves in the second half as the game was still scoreless. Wofford goalkeeper Joe Whichmann made nine saves in the shutout for the Terriers.
The Spartans best chance in the first half came in the 26th minute of play as Wofford was called for a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Reingen stepped up and whipped a shot past the Terrier wall but Whichmann was able to smother the attempt to keep it out of the back of the net. The attempt was from a similar position where Reingen scored earlier this season off a set piece.
In the 40th minute, the Terriers were attacking the Spartans' goal and had a pair of chances off of long throw-ins. Connor Davis had two chances in less than 15 seconds but Pyle stood tall in goal to keep the game scoreless.
Wofford score the game's lone goal in the 73rd minute of action. The Terriers took advantage of a UNCG defensive miss-clear and sent a ball into the box. Pierce Verchick took the pass from 15-yards out and had time to turn and rip a shot that eluded Pyle for the game-winning tally.
The Spartans turned the pressure up on the Terriers down the stretch of the second half as they recorded eight corner kicks in the final 20 minutes of the game. Senior defender Aaron Reifschneider (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) had a chance after an initial corner kick was cleared out as his shot from just inside the 18-yard box was saved by Whichmann.
The Spartans hit the road Tuesday night when they make their first SoCon trip to Johnson City, Tenn., for a meeting with East Tennessee State. UNCG picked up a 2-0 victory over the Bucs earlier this season in Greensboro.
