Baseball Adds 13 Student-Athletes For 2016 Campaign

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG baseball program will welcome 13 new student-athletes to campus beginning in the fall of 2015 as 10 high school seniors and three junior college players have declared their intent to play baseball for the Spartans according to an announcement by head coach Link Jarrett. 

The signing class includes eight pitchers, three infielders and two outfielders, including six Perfect Game nationally-ranked recruits.

Adam Amerson / RHP / 6-1 / 157 / New Bern, N.C. (West Craven)
Perfect Game Rankings: #74 state, #T-1000 national, #651 RHP
Amerson has played middle infield and pitched on the varsity squad for head coach Michael McKeel at West Craven High School since his sophomore year … Earned all-conference and all-area accolades during the 2014 season as the Eagles went 14-9 and earned No. 2 seed in the 3A state playoffs … Named the winner of West Craven's Golden Arm Award … Produced an ERA of 3.72 and a 7-3 record on the mound as a junior with four complete games and 36 strikeouts in 52.2 innings pitched … Also hit .313 and had an on base percentage of .405 … Competes for the Dirtbags Baseball Club during the summer and was named to the 2014 Perfect Game 16U WWBA All-Tournament Team as a pitcher … Earned a varsity letter in soccer as a midfielder in 2014 … Member of the Future Business Leaders of America club and the Monogram Club … Personal: Adam Randall Amerson … Born July 19, 1997 in New Bern, N.C. … Son of Randall and Amy Amerson … Undecided on a major. 

Coach Jarrett on Amerson: “The first thing we look for in pitchers is how well they command their fastball. While still developing physically, Adam can throw his fastball to any location at any time. Along with his plus command of off-speed pitches, he appears to fall in line with what gets outs at this level. Adam played for UNCG alumnus Lee Land with the Dirtbags this summer.” 

Matt Frisbee / RHP / 6-5 / 230 / Candler, N.C. (Enka)

Frisbee enters his fourth season of varsity baseball in 2015 as a pitcher under head coach Dan Taylor at Enka High School … Earned all-conference accolades his sophomore and junior seasons … Sported an ERA of 2.79 in 37.2 innings pitched with 50 strikeouts in 2014 … Also hit .385 with 23 RBIs, four doubles and three home runs … Recorded five wins and averaged 1.24 strikeouts per inning as a sophomore … Selected to participate in the 2014 East Coast Pro Showcase upon the recommendation of professional scouts … Took part in the 2013 and 2014 North Carolina State Games … Member of the Junior Classical League and the Student Body Council at Enka … Has competed for the Diamond Mine baseball club under head coach Darrin Chaplin every summer since 2012 … Personal: Matthew David Frisbee … Born Nov. 18, 1996 in Asheville, N.C. … Son of David and Traci Frisbee … Intends to major in sports medicine. 

Coach Jarrett on Frisbee: “Matt was our first commitment in this class and we are very proud to add him to our program. He was selected to play in Syracuse at East Coast Pro, which is the top event for professional prospects on the East Coast. Matt has an extremely high ceiling with his size and feel for the game. He currently commands three plus pitches on the mound and has dominated hitters in his career at Enka High School.”

Goodman will play his third season of varsity baseball as a left-handed pitcher and infielder in 2015 … Plays for Hopewell High School and head coach Chet Greeson … Earned all-conference honors as a junior … Named the Titans' Most Valuable Player in 2014 … Compiled a 1.20 ERA and struck out 34 in 23.1 innings pitched last season while holding opposing batters to a .128 average … Also tallied 57 at bats, hitting .333 with 19 hits, 13 runs scored, three doubles, one triple, two home runs and 16 RBI … Turned in a 2.62 ERA in 26.2 innings pitched as a sophomore with 40 strikeouts and a limited opposing batters to a .144 average … Has competed for head coach Andy Partin's Dirtbags team the last two summers … Personal: Nicolas Andrew Goodman … Born Nov. 22, 1996 in Charlotte, N.C. … Son of Rick and Lori Goodman … Intends to major in kinesiology. 

Coach Jarrett on Goodman: “Drew is another exciting left-handed pitcher we have been able to add to our staff. He is also a Dirtbag Showcase team member who was coached by UNCG alumnus Ryan Falcon. He has a very good arm and above average off-speed stuff. Drew has a great chance to come in and contribute to our staff right away. Getting into our strength and conditioning program, directed by Danny Wheel, will be one of the main things that takes Drew to the next level.” 

Chris Graham / OF / 5-7 / 160 / Leland, N.C. (North Brunswick)
Graham is an athletic in-state talent who has played varsity baseball for four years under head coach Dustin Medlin at North Brunswick High School … Checked in with a .290 average his sophomore season with 18 hits, 19 runs scored, a double, two triples and eight RBI … Helped the Scorpions reach the North Carolina 2A state tournament championship series … Competes for the Rock Solid club and head coach Fletcher Bates based out of Wilmington, N.C. … Also plays basketball and runs sprints on the track and field team … Has aided North Brunswick in winning three-straight track and field state titles  … Holds the school's 100-meter dash record and the state 4x200 relay record … Personal: Christopher M. Graham … Born Oct. 24, 1996 in Leland, N.C. … Son of Christopher and Crystal Graham … Undecided on a major.

Coach Jarrett on Graham: “We are adding a new element to our program in Chris with overall speed! At the North Carolina State Games Chris ran a 6.39 sixty-yard time. This puts him as one of the fastest players as well as athletes in the state. His speed will not only give us comfort in being able to cover our outfield, but will also add a pressure dynamic to our offense. Chris played for Fletcher Bates and Rock Solid Baseball this past summer.” 

Bryce Hensley / LHP / 6-4 / 210 / Asheville, N.C. (Catawba Valley CC)
Hensley will join the UNCG baseball program after spending the upcoming 2015 campaign as a freshman at Catawba Valley Community College … Recently graduated from A.C. Reynolds High School after a decorated prep career … Named 2014 Atlantic Region Honorable Mention by Perfect Game … Earned all-state and all-conference honors last season while also being named the team's MVP and the Mountain Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year … Helped the Rockets advance to the third round of the 4A state playoffs in 2013 … Tallied a 1.24 ERA and a 5-4 record as a senior, starting 11 contests and throwing four complete games with two shutouts and 84 strikeouts … Started eight of his 10 appearances as a junior and picked up three wins while also hurling a complete game shutout … Also played first base for A.C. Coach Jarrett on Hensley: “Bryce will enter our program with three years to play. He had a lot of opportunities to go Division I out of high school but chose to honor his commitment to Frank Pait at Catawba Valley Community College. He is a very talented and projectable left-handed arm that we hope can provide an immediate impact on our pitching staff. He is also a high character kid that we will add to our program. Bryce will be the second in his family to pitch in the Southern Conference. His older brother Stephen is currently a very promising prospect in Minor League Baseball.” 

Trey Jacobs / INF / 6-2 / 185 / Hope Mills, N.C. (South View)
Jacobs enters his fourth season of varsity baseball in 2015 for head coach Scott Ellis at South View High School … Currently owns the second-highest career batting average in school history at .432 as well as the fourth-most doubles (10) and fifth-most hits (37) in a single season … Earned a number of awards in 2014, including Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Year, all-state team recognition, Fayetteville Observer all-region laurels, first-team all-conference honors and Mid-South Conference All-Tournament Team accolades … Named the 2014 team MVP and a team captain and was selected to the Region 4 North Carolina State Games … Also tabbed to the all-conference first team in 2013 … Competed for the Area Stars and Charlotte Megastars baseball clubs under head coaches Derick Graham and Jeff McNeely … Named team MVP and tallied the highest average and most hits on the squad … Helped the team to the 2014 North Carolina Dixie Boys state championship … Excelled in the classroom, earning A/B honor roll status for the first three years of his high school career … A member of Teen Pep, a nationally-recognized organization where students instruct freshman class members on making proper decisions in life … Personal: James Leonard Jacobs, III … Born May 13, 1997 in Jacksonville, N.C. … Son of James and Melody Jacobs … Undecided on a major. 

Coach Jarrett on Jacobs: “Trey, another North Carolina State Games participant, also played for the Charlotte Megastars in the summer. A product of South View High School in Fayetteville, N.C., he is another player to keep an eye on. Trey is a very athletic kid who has the chance to become a very physical player. As a left-handed hitting middle infielder with some pop, he should definitely provide some depth and production to our lineup.” 

Ben Kerner / RHP / 6-3 / 170 / Cary, N.C. (Brunswick CC)
Kerner enters his sophomore season at Brunswick Community College and is coached by Robbie Allen … Made 14 appearances his freshman campaign, ending up with a 1.83 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 44.1 innings pitched … Made five starts and finished the season with a 3-1 record … Recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts in six innings in a 10-0 victory over New River Community College April 27 … Earned three varsity letters for Cary High School and head coach Brian Yerger … Named recipient of the Coaches Award his senior season … Garnered academic all-conference honors from 2009-12 … Has competed the last three summers for the Carolina Lake Monsters under head coach Greg Ayscue … Personal: Benjamin Carl Kerner … Born July 3, 1994 in Raleigh, N.C. … Son of Robert Kerner and Patricia Shields … Intends to major in economics. 

Coach Jarrett on Kerner: “Ben is going to be a great addition to our staff. He will bring a wealth of experience from the junior college level. He projects to be a weekend starter for Brunswick Community College coached by Robbie Allen. He has been a bit of a late bloomer, which I think can be attributed to his work ethic and conviction. These qualities should make him very successful at our level and help him continue to improve.” 

Jake Lewis / LHP / 6-2 / 185 / Wendell, N.C. (Corinth Holders)
Lewis will play his fourth season of varsity baseball for Corinth Holders High School under head coach Adam Weaver … Earned all-conference honors in both the Two Rivers and Northern Carolina conferences … Holds the program record for most career strikeouts at 139 … Is the first male athlete from Corinth Holders to receive a Division I athletic scholarship … Hit .299 as a junior with 20 hits, 11 runs scored, seven RBI, five doubles, a home run, an on base percentage of .347 and a slugging percentage of .417 … Turned in 14 appearances on the mound and compiled a 3-2 record with a 1.35 ERA and 66 strikeouts … Excelled statistically both on the mound and at the dish his sophomore campaign … Hit .368 with 21 hits, nine runs scored and 16 RBI … Tallied a 7-4 record and 1.73 ERA while striking out 73 in 56.2 innings pitched …. Coach Jarrett on Lewis: “Jake made a huge impact on our staff and current players at one of our showcase camps. He has very good stuff on the mound, including a plus breaking ball. He should have no problem giving college left-handed hitters fits from day one. Jake is coached by Adam Weaver who played for current UNCG pitching coach Jerry Edwards.”

Mayhew will arrive in Greensboro after a stellar prep career at West Forsyth High School under head coach Brad Bullard … Was the winning pitcher in the deciding game three of the 2014 North Carolina 4A state championship series held at the UNCG Baseball Stadium … Earned First Team All-Central Piedmont Conference honors after compiling a 2.12 ERA and 5-1 record over 30 innings and striking out 42 batters … Helped the Titans earn a No. 22 national ranking by USA Today as the state champions produced a 29-6 overall record and a 10-2 league ledger … Competed for the Carolina Rockies Showcase club the last seven seasons … Brother Ryan played baseball at UNCW from 2011-13 … Personal: Jacob Evan Mayhew … Born April 30, 1997 in Winston-Salem, N.C. … Son of Les Mayhew and Diane Bowman … Intends to major in accounting. 

Coach Jarrett on Mayhew: “Jake continues the line of West Forsyth products to enter the UNCG program. He will be the third in two years following Michael Bates and Tripp Shelton. He had a huge part in West Forsyth's state championship run by winning the final game of the championship series on the mound. Jake is another strike thrower with a high ceiling. His father Les Mayhew coaches him in the summer and fall. Les runs the Carolina Rockies showcase organization that has put multiple players into the college ranks.”

Andrew is a very heady player that has a great feel for his offensive game. I feel like in each game we saw him play, he had two hits and two stolen bases in each.”

Spitznagel will enter the program after spending his sophomore season at Wabash Valley Community College in Mt. Carmel, Ill. … As a freshman, played at Dakota Wesleyan University under head coach Steve Gust in Mitchell, S.D. …  Paced the Great Plains Athletic Conference in stolen bases … Led Dakota Wesleyan in at bats, batting average, hits, walks drawn, runs scored, stolen bases, triples, hits, sacrifice hits, on base percentage and slugging percentage … Finished second on the squad in RBI … In 51 games played, tallied a .375 batting average, 69 hits, 49 runs scored, 32 RBI, 90 total bases and 25 stolen bases … Also produced a .455 on base percentage and .489 slugging mark … Earned three varsity letters at Colerain High School where he hit .550 as a junior in 2012 … Earned All-Greater Miami Conference honors and team MVP recognition … Competed for the Champions Baseball Academy over the summer and led the team in batting average, runs scored, walks drawn, stolen bases, slugging percentage and on base percentage … Personal: Benjamin David Spitznagel … Born Aug. 30, 1994 in Cincinnati, Ohio … Son of Rick and Lynn Spitznagel … Majoring in business.

He has the ability to get on base, steal bases and score a lot of runs. His ability to put the ball in play with two strikes makes him a very pesky hitter.”

Coach Jarrett on Trejo: “Cesar is a player who we have watched for a while now. We saw him as a freshman and it has been amazing to see the transformation of his game. Cesar showed extremely well at the North Carolina State Games last summer. He is a big physical kid who can handle the middle infield. He has the potential to be a middle of the order bat for us. Cesar is a local kid who plays for Donnie and Chris Maness at Ragsdale High School. He was also part of the Hi-Toms Legion program which was one of the top clubs in the state this year.” 

Jeremiah Triplett / RHP / 6-2 / 173 / Wilkesboro, N.C. (West Wilkes)
Triplett has competed for West Wilkes High School and head coach Drew Ward since 2012 … Named to the all county and all conference teams in both baseball and football and has collected five varsity letters between the two sports … Made 12 appearances on the mound last season and finished with a 3.32 ERA as well as a 4-5 record … Struck out 93 batters in 53.2 innings pitched and held opposing batters to a .166 average … Hit .316 at the plate in 76 at bats, tallying 24 hits, 23 runs scored, three doubles, a triple, three home runs and 19 RBI … Went 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts … Competed the last two summers for American Legion Post 31 under head coach Terry Johnson … Was the pitcher for the Region 7 team that won the gold medal at the North Carolina State Games … A four-year honor student and member of the Beta Club … Personal: Jeremiah David Triplett … Born July 11, 1997 in Wilkesboro, N.C. … Son of Rickie and Andrea Triplett … Intends to major in kinesiology.  

Coach Jarrett on Triplett: “Jeremiah was one of the most projectable arms at the North Carolina State Games last summer. He had the highest recorded velocity at the event and showed off his athleticism with a sub 7.0 sixty time. Jeremiah is very well rounded athletically as he plays quarterback for his high school football team. We expect Jeremiah to make great strides on the field once he starts to focus on baseball year round.” 

UNCG will open its 2015 schedule with a three-game series against Triad rival High Point Feb. 13-15.
