Baseball Matches Up Against ETSU In First Round of SoCon Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 7 seed UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team travels to Greenville, South Carolina, to take part in the First Round of The Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament against No. 6 seed ETSU on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

    LAST TIME OUT                 

  • The Spartans dropped two-of-three games at Western Carolina this previous weekend.  

  • Freshman Cannon Lee hit his new career-high in strikeouts with seven in game two against the Catamounts.  

  • Jacob Dilley led the way last week for the Spartans with five hits.  
           

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS                    

  • The Spartans ended the regular season 22-31 overall record and 7-13 in conference play.         

  • Jake MuellerJacob Budzik and Dilley combined to drive in 115 of the 294 total runs UNCG has scored this season.  

  • UNCG is nationally ranked in: triples (21st/16), triples per game (27th / 0. 30) and sacrifice flies (49th/28).                

  • The Spartans are 19-1 this season when leading after the seventh inning.   

  • Budzik leads the team and is tied for eighth in the SoCon in doubles with 17.         

  • Mueller leads the team in hits with 67.    

  • Freshman Tanner Berry has been hitting .336 with 46 hits, 25 RBIs and seven doubles since entering the lineup against Pittsburgh on Feb. 28.       

  • Since becoming a qualified hitter, Berry ranks 124th (12th best as a catcher) in the nation in batting average (.336).  

  • Brantley Truitt paces the team in stolen bases with 19 on the season.   

  • Noah Chapman is one of the premier strikeout pitchers in the SoCon. He leads the team and is ranked third in the SoCon with 79 strikeouts.      

  • Chapman currently sits at 189 career strikeouts for UNCG.     

  • Out of the bullpen, Ayden West has been dominant with a 3.38 ERA in 21 appearances with 24 strikeouts.     

  • John Horton is the Spartans' closer with six saves on the season.   

  • The Spartans were voted to finish fifth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.                                

  • UNCG concluded the 2025 season with a 21-33 overall record and went 9-12 in SoCon play.       

  • Last time in the SoCon Tournament, the No. 6 seed Spartans were knocked out by No. 5 Wofford in the first round.                

  • Head Coach Cody Ellis is in his third season at the helm of the Spartans, guiding them to a 76-85 record during his time.                     

                 
SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS 

  • ETSU enters the First Round of the SoCon Tournament with a 30-22 overall record and is 10-11 in conference play.     

  • The Buccaneers most recently were swept by Mercer this past weekend.   

  • ETSU has dropped six of its last seven games to end the regular season.    

  • ETSU ranks nationally in: doubles (12th/ 121), double per game (14th/ 2.33) and batting average (51st / .298).  

  • Tristian Curless is the most dangerous bat in the lineup, hitting .376 with 76 hits, 63 RBIs and 15 home runs.  

  • The offense is bolstered by Nate Conner and Henry Ferguson with 51 and 42 RBIs, respectively. 

  • Michael Harpster is the ace of the pitching staff, with 72 innings pitched, 78 strikeouts and a 4.00 ERA.  

  • The Buccaneers claimed the 2025 SoCon Championship, advancing to the Nashville Regional but fell to No. 4 seed Wright State in the elimination game.  

  • Head Coach Joe Pennucci continues his ninth season at the helm of the program with a 261-183 record.                 

SERIES HISTORY VS. THE BUCCANEERS 
The Spartans lead the series 45-25 against ETSU. The Buccaneers claimed the regular season series earlier this year. However, UNCG took game one of the series behind a Chapman eight strikeout performance in seven innings of work.
