Former Men's Hoops Star Mikko Koivisto To Play In FIBA World Cup For Finland

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former UNCG men's basketball standout Mikko Koivisto will represent his home country of Finland in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup held in Spain from August 30-September 14. Koivisto played for the Spartans from 2006-2010 and is 12th all-time in UNCG history in scoring.  

Koivisto and the Finland National Team are one of six teams in Group C that includes the United States of America, Ukraine, Dominican Republic, Turkey and New Zealand. Each team in the group will play the round-robin format with the top four in the group advancing to the knockout stages Sept. 4-14.

Finland opens the FIBA World Championships Saturday afternoon as Koivisto leads it against the USA team. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. (ET) and will be aired nationally on ESPN. Additionally, Finland will play Sunday vs. Ukraine (10 a.m.), Tuesday vs. Dominican Republic (3:30 p.m.), Wednesday vs. Turkey (11:30 a.m.) and Thursday vs. New Zealand (9 a.m.).

Koivisto was a four-year letterwinner for the Spartans from 2006-2010 and played in 118 career games, including 81 starts. He scored 1,178 career points, averaging 10.0 points per game to rank 12th on the all-time scoring list. He connected on 263-of-705 (37.3%) from three-point land during his career. His 263 career three-pointers rank second all-time in program history while his 705 attempts from long range is a program record.
