Women's Soccer Opens SoCon Play at Mercer & The Citadel

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team opens Southern Conference action this weekend against Mercer Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. and at The Citadel Sunday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.

Both games will be live Free of charge on the Southern Conference Digital Network. UNCG is 3-0 all-time against Mercer and is a perfect 13-0 against the Citadel.

The Spartans (4-4-2) are riding a two-game winning streak with back-to-back shutouts against High Point (W, 3-0) and James Madison (W, 1-0). Junior Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) scored the first goal against High Point and the game winner versus James Madison over the weekend. White was named SoCon Player of the Week and leads the team with seven goals. Her seven goals is tied for 20th in the nation and set a new single-season career high for goals.

Classmate Candice Forbes (Pleasant Garden, N.C./Southeast Guilford) is second on the team with two goals. Sophomore Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammer School) scored a goal against High Point and has two assists on the season.

Junior Kirsten Glad (Germantown, Md./St. John's College) and redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg/Penn State) split the shutout against High Point while Buehler played the full-90 earning a shutout against James Madison.

Mercer enters the contest with a 5-4 record after defeating USC Aiken, 5-0, last Sunday. The Bears are a perfect 5-0 at home this season.  Senior Lauren Gassie leads the team with four goals and two assists. Junior Maggie Cropp has started six games in goal making 22 saves and one shutout. The last time these teams met was in 2006 at a neutral tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. where the Spartans won 1-0.

The Bulldogs have a 4-6 record after going 1-1 last weekend against Charleston Southern (W, 3-1) and the College of Charleston (L, 2-1). Senior Vanessa Aponte leads the team with four goals and two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Naomi Carter has started all 10 games and leads the SoCon with 69 saves with one shutout. Last season, UNCG defeated The Citadel, 5-3, on the road as White scored two of the five goals.
