GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's basketball team begins a two-game home stretch Thursday night as the Spartans host Southern Conference co-leader and defending SoCon Tournament Champion Wofford. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum. The game will be streamed in full HD for free on the SoCon Digital Network while also being aired on 1320 AM and the TuneIn App with Scotty Pryzwansky and Darryl Kosciak providing the call.
Thursday's game marks the second straight contest for the Spartans against a league co-leader as UNCG is coming off an 81-72 loss at Chattanooga Saturday. The Spartans connected on 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the field and out-rebounded the Mocs 37-34 in the loss while also out-scoring them in the paint 36-26. Chattanooga had a clear advantage at the free throw line with 38 attempts, compared to just 13 attempts for UNCG.
Sophomore guard Tevon Saddler (Aberdeen, Md./St. Frances Academy) led the Spartans with 22 points in 32 minutes of action. Saddler connected on 9-of-16 from the field and 3-of-5 from the free throw line. Junior forward Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) added 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting while sophomore guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) chipped in 12 points and seven assists. Freshman Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) nearly posted a double-double with a career-high 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Thursday's game marks the 32nd meeting all-time between UNCG and Wofford. The Spartans trail the all-time series by a 10-21 margin but have won two out of the last three against the Terriers. Last year, the Spartans stunned Wofford with a 73-71 victory in Spartanburg on the Terriers' senior night. UNCG rallied from a 15-point deficit and trailed 38-29 at halftime, but a 44-33 second half effort propelled the Spartans to the victory. The Spartans connected on 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the field in the second half and hit all three of its 3-pointers in the comeback.
Locke led the way with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line while Saddleradded 14 points. Center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) came off the bench and chipped in 13 points and six rebounds while former Spartan Kyle Cain added 10 points and eight rebounds. Spencer Collins led Wofford with 15 points while Karl Cochran added 12 points on just 5-of-16 shooting from the field.
UNCG enters Thursday's game with a 6-15 overall record and a 2-6 mark in Southern Conference play. The Spartans won their last home game with a 75-63 victory over VMI Jan. 14. The Spartans are 4-6 at home this season. UNCG is averaging 70.5 points per game while opponents are averaging 74.4 points per game.
Saddlerleads the team in scoring at 16.3 points per game, which ranks seventh in the SoCon. He is also third on the team on the glass at 4.6 rebounds per game and second on the team with 70 assists. He has scored in double figures in 16 of 19 games, including six games with at least 20 points. Locke is second on the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game, ranking 11th in the league. Locke is second on the glass at 5.3 rebounds per game and is shooting 48.5 percent (110-of-227) from the field.
White is third on the team and 18th in the league in scoring at 11.4 points per game. He leads the SoCon on the glass at 7.1 rebounds per game and with six double-doubles. He is shooting 53.7 percent (95-of-177) from the field but is averaging just 24.1 minutes per game, due in part to seven games where he has fouled out.
Senior guard Nicholas Paulos (Salt Lake City, Utah/New Hampton School) is fourth on the team in scoring at 10.7 points per game. Paulos ranks fourth in 3-pointers made per game at 2.9 and is shooting 41.4 percent 60-of-145 from distance. Baldwin rounds out the Spartans in double figures at 10.5 points per game. He is second on the team with 50 assists and fourth on the team on the glass at 4.4 rebounds per game.
Wofford enters Thursday's game with a 16-5 overall record and a 7-1 mark in Southern Conference play. The Terriers have won seven out of their last eight games with their lone loss at The Citadel. Additionally, Wofford is 4-5 this season on the road, compared to 10-0 at home. The Terriers are averaging 67.0 points and holding opponents to a league-low 61.2 points per game.
Cochran leads the team and ranks ninth in the league in scoring at 15.5 points per game. He also leads the team with 5.9 rebounds per game, 61 assists, 39 steals and 18 blocked shots. He has hit a team-high 67 3-pointers and is shooting 39.9 percent from long range.
Collins is second on the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game. He is third on the team with 25 3-pointers made and third in free throw attempts with 54. Eric Garcia is fifth on the team in scoring at 8.2 points per game and second with 61 assists. Justin Gordon adds 8.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game while Lee Skinner adds 8.3 points and 5.6 caroms per contest.
