Late Samford Goal Hands Women's Soccer First Road Loss of SoCon Season

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team (5-8-3) held the Southern Conference leader Samford scoreless for 76 minutes Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs late goal propelled them past the Spartans as UNCG moves to 3-2-1 in league play. Samford remains unbeaten at 6-0 (11-4) and has not allowed a goal since September 13.

UNCG fired off five shots in the first half while the Bulldogs took 10. Samford edged the Spartans 2-0 in corner kicks. Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) made five saves in the first 45 minutes of action.

The Spartans defense held strong well into the second half against the most potent offense in the league. The Bulldogs took the lead on a Sara Smeltzer goal in the 76thminute. Despite a late UNCG push, the Spartans were unable to break down Samford's defense as the final minutes played out.

Sunday's match marked the ninth meeting between the two teams since they first met in 2008. With the Bulldogs win, the all-time series is now tied 4-4-1. Sunday's loss also marked the first time UNCG has lost at the Samford Soccer Stadium and first road loss in conference play during 2015.

The Spartans return home for the remainder of the regular season beginning Friday when they host Mercer (6-5-3, 3-1-1) at 7 p.m.
