Softball Drops SoCon Doubleheader at Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UNCG softball team lost game one against Chattanooga, 5-4, on a walk-off and dropped game two, 3-1, in the SoCon opener Saturday at Frost Stadium.

The Spartans now sit at 12-11, 0-2 in conference play. Chattanooga improved to 19-8 and is 2-0 in SoCon action.

Chattanooga 5, UNCG 4

In game one, Chattanooga scored three runs in the seventh inning to stun the Spartans, 5-4.

Freshman pitcher Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) took the tough luck loss falling to 5-4 on the season. Bazonski threw 6.1 innings and allowed five earned runs off eight hits. Kailey Palazzolo improves to 2-0 after throwing 4.2 innings and allowed two earned runs.

Junior Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) was 2-for-3 with a RBI doubles. Junior Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) collected two hits.

UNCG scored two runs in the third inning off three hits. With one out, junior Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) singled up the middle and Vega followed with a single to right field. Junior Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) lined a RBI single down the right field line to make it 1-0 UNCG. Pinch runner Rebecca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) scored on a passed ball for the second run of the frame.  

The Blue and Gold added two insurance runs in the fourth inning off two hits. Freshman Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) worked a walk to start the inning. Geiner singled to put runners on first and second. After a illegal pitch, Lindsay Thomas lined a RBI sacrifice fly to right field. Vega roped a two out RBI double to push UNCG's lead to 4-0.

Chattanooga responded with two runs in the fifth inning off two hits. With one out, Alyssa Taylor singled and Marina Wilkerson tripled to right center to make the score 4-1. Sam Taylor earned a RBI groundout to inch the Mocs closer at 4-2.

In the seventh inning, the Mocs rallied back with three runs to earn a 5-4 walk-off victory against the Spartans. Jesslyn Stockard singled to start the rally and pinch hitter Jenny Garcia lined a RBI triple to make the score 4-3. Sam Taylor tied the game with a single to left field. After a sacrifice bunt, Sara Beth Roberts ended the game with a walk-off RBI single.

Chattanooga 3, UNCG 1

In game two, freshman Cori Jennings led the Mocs throwing a complete game and allowed only one earned run off nine hits to pick up her eighth win of the season.

Nicole Thomas fell to 2-4 after throwing a complete game in six innings and allowed just three earned runs off six hits.

Lindsay Thomas was 2-for-2 at the plate and Nicole Thomas had a RBI single in the third inning. Geiner picked up two more hits going 2-for-3. Senior Tatiana Alcala (Oxnard, Calif./Pacifica) also had two hits in the contest.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after a one-out RBI single from Nicole Thomas.

Chattanooga took a 2-1 lead off three hits in the third inning. Sam Taylor singled and J.J Hamill earned a bunt single to start the inning. Roberts lined a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game at 1-1. Stockard laced a RBI to centerfield and Alcala nailed a runner trying to stretch to third base to end the inning.

The Mocs added to their lead with a solo home run from Anyssa Robles to leadoff the fourth inning to make the score 3-1.

UNCG had a chance in the seventh inning after Lindsay Thomas walked to start the inning. After a groundout and a illegal pitch, L. Thomas moved to third. Jennings was able to end the threat with a strike out and a groundout to seal the win for Chattanooga.

The Blue and Gold will look to salvage game three against Chattanooga Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m. at Frost Stadium.
