Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball hit three home runs and used a six-run fourth inning to run-rule North Carolina A&T, 10-0, in five innings Tuesday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The Spartans improve to 14-15 with the win and North Carolina A&T falls to 10-17 in the loss.
Junior Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and six RBI. Classmate Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) went 2-for-3 at the leadoff spot.
Freshman pitcher Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) earned the win improving to 7-6 on the season. Bazonski threw five innings and allowed no earned runs with four strikeouts. Janika May fell to 5-9 on the season after allowing 10 earned runs off 10 hits with seven walks.
UNCG jumped ahead in the third inning with four runs off five hits. Freshman Rebecca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) singled to left field but was thrown out trying to reach second base. Geiner followed with a single down the right field line and senior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) lined a RBI double scoring Geiner from first. N. Thomas blasted her fourth home run of the season giving UNCG a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) hit a solo home run to make it 4-0 Spartans off back-to-back homers.
In the fourth inning, the Spartans scored six-runs off four hits, including a grand slam from Nicole Thomas. Freshman Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) doubled to start the inning. Kale worked a walk and Geiner reached off a bunt single. After a out, N. Thomas launched a first-pitch grand slam to left field to push UNCG's lead to 8-0. Three straight walks loaded the bases again and sophomore Hagan Kiser (Asheboro, N.C./Southwestern) lined a RBI single to left field. The final run of the inning came home off a wild pitch.
Bazonski ended the game by keeping the Lady Aggies off the scoreboard in the fifth inning to seal the run-rule victory for UNCG.
The Blue and Gold remain home for a three-game series against Western Carolina starting with a doubleheader Friday, April 3 at 1 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
