GREENSBORO, N.C. – Incoming UNCG freshman guard Francisco Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) represented his home country of Spain in the recent FIBA U19 Championships in Greece and helped it place eighth overall in the event with a 3-4 record.
Alonso, 6-3 guard from Malaga, Spain, started six of the seven games for Spain, averaging 9.1 points, 3.1 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game. He also connected on 41 percent from 3-point land during the tournament. Spain picked up wins over China, Argentina and Egypt while dropping games to Turkey, Greece, Italy and Australia in the two-week event.
Alonso scored in double figures in three games, including a tournament-high 15 points in the seventh place game against Australia as he was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. He also added 14 points and three assists against Turkey, hitting 3-of-4 from 3-point land while chipping in 10 points against Argentina as he was 3-of-6 from long range.
