Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNCG volleyball earned a sweep over the Charlotte 49ers in its last non-conference match of 2016 on Wednesday night. UNCG improves to 3-5 all-time over the 49ers with the 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-22) victory. UNCG is now 11-10 overall, and over the .500 mark for the first time this season. Charlotte falls to 7-16 on the year.
Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) led all competitors with 14 kills, hitting at a .357 average. Alexis Mourier (Elkhart, W.Va./George Washington) hit at a .400 average, tallying 13 kills. Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) earned a match-best 39 assists, and chipped in six digs.
Ronni Katarzynski (Winfield, Ill./West Chicago) started at libero for the first time this season, and led the team with 16 digs. Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange chipped in 13, with Grace Howell (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall-Heath) adding 12.
The Spartans were able to use an 8-0 run to take a leads early in the first set. Kills from Mourier, Brezwyn and a block assist from Mourier and Jones helped put UNCG up 12-3. Charlotte was able to battle back into the set, using a 6-1 run to knot the set up at 19-19. UNCG and Charlotte were tied again at 19, 21, 22, and 23 before the Spartans earned back-to-back points on a kill from Robeck, and a block assist from Robeck and Penner to take the first set.
In the second set, UNCG was able to jump out to an 8-4 lead before Charlotte was able to come back and tie the set up at eight. The Spartans maintained a 1-3 point lead before scoring three of the final four points to take the set. A pair of Charlotte errors as well as kills from Brezwyn and Mourier aided UNCG down the stretch.
The final set was locked up a 15 before the Charlotte used a 3-0 run to gain the 18-15 advantage. A Spartan service error, as well as back-to-back 49er block assists helped give Charlotte the lead. UNCG used a 7-1 run to take the set. Three kills from Mourier, a block solo from Jones and a kill from Rebecca Rice's (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) all contributed to the run.
UNCG returns to action Friday, Oct. 21 as it will host the Wofford Terriers inside Fleming Gym at 5:00 p.m.
