Men's Basketball Hosts Wake Forest Friday Night In Triad Battle

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's basketball team will put its six-game winning streak on the line Friday night as the Spartans host Atlantic Coast Conference member and Triad rival Wake Forest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum and will be televised on ESPN3 and the ESPN App with Scott Pryzwansky and Darryl Kosciak on the call. Additionally, the game will be radio broadcast on TuneIn and online at www.uncgspartans.com/radio.

UNCG enters Friday's game with a 7-2 overall record. The 7-2 record through the first nine games is tied for the second-best start in program history and the best since the 2004-05 campaign when that team opened with a 7-2 record through the first nine games. The 2004-05 team finished the year with an 18-12 record, the fifth most wins in program history at the NCAA Division I level, UNCG has only started off the season better one time in 1994-95 when the Spartans opened with a 12-2 record on their way to a program-best 23-6 mark.

The Spartans enter Friday's game riding a six-game winning streak, dating back to Nov. 19. The six-game winning streak is tied for the seventh-longest winning streak in program history and longest since winning seven straight in the 2011-12 season from Jan. 12-Feb. 4. The six-game winning streak marks the fourth longest winning streak as an NCAA Division I program (first season 1991).

The Spartans became the first UNCG team in the Division I era to post a six-game winning streak during non-conference play. Dating back to last season, the Spartans are 13-4 over their last 17 games as they finished the year with a 6-2 record and have opened this season with a 7-2 mark.

The Greensboro Coliseum has been the full-time home of the Spartans since the 2009-10 season. UNCG is off to a 5-1 start at home this year, including five straight victories heading into Friday night's contest. The Spartans posted a 12-4 record last season and are 17-5 over the last two years, a 77.3 winning percentage. In fact, over the past 12 games at the Greensboro Coliseum the Spartans are 11-1 with the lone loss coming to then seventh-ranked Virginia.

UNCG is averaging 73.6 points per game this season while holding opponents to a 59.4 points per game average. The Spartans are shooting 45.2 percent (241-of-533) from the field and 39.2 percent (91-of-232) from 3-point land. UNCG has five players averaging over 8.0 points per game and eight players averaging at least 4.1 points per game.

Sophomore guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) leads the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game. Alonso has hit a team-high 25 3-pointers, connecting on 43.9 percent, tied for the team lead. He leads the team and the Southern Conference at the free throw line, hitting 92.0 percent (23-of-25). Senior guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) is second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game. Baldwin also leads the team with 36 assists and 20 steals while ranking fifth on the team with 4.0 rebounds per game. He is shooting 44.6 percent (41-of-92) from the field and 75 percent (21-of-28) from the free throw line.

Junior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) rounds out the Spartans in double figure scoring at 11.4 points per game. Smith also ranks third on the team on the glass at 5.0 rebounds per game and second on the team with 19 offensive rebounds. He is shooting 34 percent (18-of-53) from 3-point land this season. Senior center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) is fourth on the team in scoring at 9.4 points per game while tied for the team lead with 5.9 rebounds per game. White is shooting 52.3 percent (34-of-65) from the field.

Sophomore guard Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) is second on the team with 34 assists and 17 steals. Troy adds 8.5 points per game and is shooting 43.9 percent (18-of-41) from 3-point land. Junior forward Jordy Kuiper (Groningen, Netherlands/Canaries Basketball Academy) chips in 5.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Kuiper is shooting 56.4 percent (22-of-39) from the field. Redshirt freshman forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) is tied for the team lead with 5.9 rebounds per game while leading the team with 21 offensive rebounds.

Wake Forest enters Friday's game with a 7-2 overall record and has won two straight games. The Demon Deacons have picked up wins over Radford, Bucknell, UTEP, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, Richmond and Charlotte while falling to Villanova and Northwestern. Wake Forest is averaging 82.4 points per game while allowing 72.3 points per game against. The Demon Deacons are shooting 48.4 percent (254-of-523) from the field and 38.2 percent (73-of-191) from 3-point land.

Four players average in double figures on the season for Wake Forest. John Collins leads the team in scoring at 18.1 points per game and on the glass at 10.6 rebounds per game. Collins is shooting 63.5 percent (61-of-96) from the field and has been to the free throw line a team-high 60 times, converting 68.3 percent. Keyshawn Woods is second on the team in scoring at 13.0 points per game. Woods is shooting 55.2 percent (16-of-29) from 3-point land while grabbing 4.2 rebounds per game.

Bryan Crawford leads the team with 55 assists on the year and is averaging 12.7 points per game. Crawford has hit 10 3-pointers this year and leads the team with 10 steals. Dinos Mitoglou rounds out the double figure scorers at 10.3 points per game. Mitoglou is second on the team on the glass at 7.1 rebounds per game.

Friday's game marks the 10th meeting all-time between UNCG and Wake Forest since the Spartans moved to NCAA Division I in 1991. UNCG is 0-9 all-time against the Demon Deacons, including am 87-59 loss in the Spartans' first-ever game as a NCAA Division I program Nov. 23, 1991. Friday's game marks the third time Wake Forest has made the trip to Greensboro. The Demon Deacons posted wins at the Greensboro Coliseum in 2012 (84-70) and 2009 (75-60).

Last season, the Spartans dropped a hard fought 81-71 contest in Winston-Salem. Former Spartan scored 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field. Baldwin added 14 points while center White tallied 11 points and seven rebounds.
