Greensboro, N.C. – The UNCG softball team (4-1) is set for a four-game weekend at the Carolina Classic hosted by South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., February 19-20. The Spartans are fresh off a 4-1 weekend at the River City Leadoff hosted by Jacksonville where they picked up three wins over Power 5 opponents Kansas and No. 23 NC State.
Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) was named Southern Conference Player of the Week after batting .647 with three extra-base hits during opening weekend. She had a perfect weekend defensively as the starting catcher with 27 putouts and no errors.
Friday the Spartans will got head-to-head with Longwood at 2:30 p.m. and then face off with host South Carolina at 5 p.m. on SEC Network +. UNCG leads the all-time series 21-11 against Longwood. Last time the two squads met, Longwood swept the Spartans in a non-conference doubleheader March 6, 2007. The Gamecocks are 7-1 all-time against UNCG most recently defeating the Spartans 13-0 in five innings February 9, 2014.
Saturday UNCG will play Ohio at 10 a.m. before taking the field against Winthrop at 3 p.m. The Spartans lead the all-time series 6-4 against the Bobcats and are 16-10 against Winthrop. Last time UNCG faced Ohio was March 10, 2006, when the Bobcats dealt UNCG a 6-5 loss in Rock Hill, S.C. Saturday's game against Winthrop marks the first time the two teams meet since UNCG's 5-3 win over the Eagles February 20, 2004.
