Kiser Hits First Career Home Run, Four Other Spartans Go Yard in Pair of Shutout Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team earned its 20th win of the season Saturday afternoon with a pair of mercy rule shutouts over Robert Morris (6-21) and George Washington (9-12). Five different Spartans hit home runs in the victories including Hagan Kiser (Asheboro, N.C./Southwestern) who hit her first career long ball in the second game of the day. Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) and Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) earned wins in the circle and combined to allow just five hits while striking out 11 batters and walking just two.

UNCG wasted no time against Robert Morris quickly taking a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) extended her hit-streak to four games with a one-out single up the middle. Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) reached on a dropped strike three placing two runners on base for Sidney Grkman (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson) who singled to the pitcher sending McClaskey home for a 1-0 lead. Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) loaded the bases with a single to left centerfield and Bryden drove in two runs extending UNCG's lead to 3-0.

Kendall McKinney (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) singled through the right side, scoring Wright for UNCG's fourth run of the inning before RMU was able to escape the bases loaded threat.

UNCG added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Vega started things off with a solo home run to center field and after an Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) walk, Wright followed suit with a two-run bomb to right centerfield.

McClaskey would single up the middle in the bottom of the third inning to plate McKinney who led off the inning with a single through the left side for the 8-0 lead.

Bazonski (11-2) was able to retire the next three Colonials on consecutive groundouts and despite allowing a leadoff single to RMU in the top of the fifth, she worked three quick outs to end the game in UNCG's favor and picking up her 11th win of the season.

McClaskey, Wright, Bryden and McKinney all had multi-hit game s while Wright and Bryden combined for four RBI.

UNCG carried the momentum into the second game of the day, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) led things off with a double off the center field fence. McClaskey singled through the left side pushing Thomas to third base. Grkman drove in both base runners with a double to left field and Wright's single through the right side plated her a batter later.

Bryden then hit a deep fly ball over the center field fence for two more Spartan runs and the 5-0 lead.

Kiser hit her first career home run two innings later which scored Bryden who drew a five-pitch walk just before.

Thomas hit the Spartans' third two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning and the 49th long ball of her career in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 9-0 UNCG lead.

Bryden (7-6) finished off the Colonials setting them down in order in the top of the fifth inning, securing her seventh win of the season. She struck out six in the win allowing just two hits and only allowing one base runner on balls.

Offensively, she led the Spartans over the course of the day going three-for-four with four RBI, a home run, two runs scored and a walk. She slugged 1.5000 in the two wins and had an on base percentage of .800. McClaskey led the team with four hits and extended her hit-streak to five while five other Spartans had a multi-hit day.

Every member of UNCG's starting line up recorded a hit on the day.

UNCG finished the week going 6-1 at home this week and hit at least one home run in each of their six wins.

The Spartans return to action Wednesday afternoon for a midweek game against former Southern Conference foe Elon at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
