Vega Hits Two Homers as Softball Blanks Drexel

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team defeated Drexel (14-10), 8-0, in five innings Friday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Stadium. Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) hit two home runs in the victory while Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) earned her 12th win of the season in the circle with her seventh complete game and fourth shutout of the season.

UNCG now leads the all-time series 5-1 over the Dragons and is 2-0 since head coach Janelle Breneman took over the program.

UNCG took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Vega hit her first of two home runs, bringing Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) along for the ride. Her long ball made it the fourth-straight game UNCG has hit a home run. The Spartans have hit at least one home run in eight of their last nine games and are 8-1 during that stretch.

Two batters later Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) hit her sixth home run of the season extending UNCG's lead to three runs.

A two-out double by Thomas in the bottom of the second made it a 4-0 ball game when she drove in Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) who reached with a lead off single.

UNCG added two more runs when Sholtes tallied her second hit of the day with bases loaded. She drove in Sidney Grkman (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson) who reached on an error. Wright scored on the throw by Drexel's left fielder to make it a 6-0 game.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Vega hit her second homer of the game once again scoring Thomas who led off the inning with a walk making it 8-0 UNCG.

Drexel challenge Bazonski in the top of the fifth tallying two hits to start the inning but the sophomore hurler was able to escape the threat with runners in scoring position when Allison Geiner (Raleight, N.C./Middle Creek) made a great charging catch in center field to end the game.

Six Spartans tallied hits in the five inning victory while Thomas, Vega, Wright, Sholtes and Hagan Kiser (Asheboro, N.C./Southwestern) all had multi-hit games.

Bazonski struck out four and walked just one in five innings of work while holding Drexel to just three hits.

Southern Conference play begins this weekend but the Spartans have a bye. They will return to the diamond Wednesday, March 30, for a 6 p.m. game at North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
