Elon Slides Past Softball in Midweek Action

Box Score

Elon, N.C. – The UNCG softball team (26-16) fell to Elon (22-17), 1-0, at the Hunt Softball Park on the campus of Elon University Wednesday night. Each team tallied just three hits while Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) tossed six innings allowing just one unearned run in her fifth loss of the season. UNCG leads the all-time series 38-34-1 and are now 8-3 against the Phoenix since head coach Janelle Breneman took over in 2013.

Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood), Kendall McKinney (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) and Hagan Kiser (Asheboro, N.C./Southwestern) tallied the only three hits for UNCG.

Bazonski was perfect through the first three innings but a full count walk to Emily Cameron to start the fourth would give the Phoenix their first base runner of the day.

Two batters later a single by Kara Shutt broke up Bazonski's no-hitter. Elon would load the bases but the Spartans were able to escape the threat and head into the top of the fifth inning unscathed.

McKinney tallied her hit in the fifth but would be stranded at second after a sacrifice bunt and a looking strikeout by Sidney Grkman (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson).

Kristen Hoover singled up the middle with one out and would reach safely at second on a fielder's choice by an error from Kiser to place a runner in scoring position for the second consecutive inning.

A two-out single by Alaina Hall scored her two batters later to give Elon a one-run lead.

Bazonski worked a one, two, three inning for the fourth time in the bottom of the sixth and the Spartan dugout got rowdy in the top of the seventh in anticipation of carrying over some of those seventh inning sparks from last weekend.

McKinney drew a walk after the first two Spartans were retired on a fly out and an unlucky line out. Kiser than tallied her lone hit on a single to left field placing the tying run at second base.

Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) drew a full count but a called strike three high in the zone would end the game in Elon's favor.

The Spartans return home to host Furman for a three-game SoCon series this weekend. First pitch of Saturday's double header is slated for 1 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
