Softball Falls to Charlotte in Final Midweek of the Season

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. – The UNCG softball team (29-21) fell to Charlotte (28-21) in the final non-conference midweek game of the regular season Tuesday night, 7-1. The 49ers lead the all-time series 42-33 after Tuesday's loss and the Spartans move to 5-3 against Charlotte since head coach Janelle Breneman took over the program four years ago and Tuesday's loss marks the first time Breneman's squad has lost to the 49ers on the road since 2013.

Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) (17-6) hadn't allowed a hit through the first three innings, as both teams were deadlocked 0-0. A lead off triple by Charlotte's Emma Ocker sparked a six-run inning for the 49ers who capitalized on a pair of Spartan errors, one which allowed two runs to score.

Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) came in to relieve Bazonski with no outs in the inning and bases loaded. After striking out of the first batter she faced, Bryden worked her way out of the jam allowing just one unearned run, credited to Bazonksi, to score.

Charlotte's pitcher Lexi Betancourt continued her dominance tossing five and two third innings of hitless softball before a single through the left side by Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) broke up the 49ers no-hit bid in the top of the sixth.

Allison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) reached on a fielding error by Charlotte's second baseman, placing runners on first and second for UNCG with two outs. Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) doubled to right field driving in her sister for the Spartans only run of the game.

Charlotte extended its lead back to six runs in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Bailey Rhoney for a 7-1 score.

Bazonski was dealt the loss after throwing three innings allowing six runs, four earned, on four hits while striking out three. Bryden tossed three innings of relief allowing one unearned run on one hit and fanning two.

The Spartans return home to host Chattanooga in the final home series of the season Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1. UNCG will bid farewell to its six seniors prior to the start of Sunday's 1:30 p.m. first pitch vs. the Mocs.
