GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG is set for a three game Southern Conference series with the Wofford Terriers at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C. this weekend. UNCG and Wofford will play Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Spartans are currently in first place in the SoCon with a 33-13 overall record, and 11-4 record in SoCon play. Wofford is 26-21, and 8-7, currently tied for fourth, in the SoCon. Wofford was picked to finish third in both of the SoCon's preseason polls.

The Spartans suffered their first series loss of 2016 last weekend. UNCG dropped the final two games at home to Samford after taking the first game of the series. It was just the second and third home losses of the year, and it is the second time UNCG has lost back-to-back games in 2016.
Wofford and UNCG have played 59 games history, with the Spartans holding a 41-18 advantage in that time. The Terriers have had success as of late, earning seven of the 18 wins in the last 10 meetings. Under Link Jarrett, UNCG is 2-7. In the last meetings in Spartanburg, S.C., the Spartans finished the weekend 0-3 in 2014.
Even after a tough weekend against Samford, UNCG has the top offense in the NCAA. The Spartans have hit for a .358 team batting average, 26 points higher than UNCW who is second in that category. UNCG and UNCW score 9.2 runs per game, most of any team in the NCAA. The Navy and Gold also lead in runs (421), hits (597), doubles per game (2.7), doubles (124), triples (30), slugging percentage (.546), sacrifice flies (33), and on-base percentage (.437).
The Spartan offense is led by a pair of hitters who are above the .400 mark. L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai'i/Ohlone College) and Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) have hit .408, and .405 respectively. Spitznagel is third in the NCAA with 77 hits, Kalawaia is eighth with 73. Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) is 14th in the nation with 71 hits, but leads the NCAA with 10 sacrifice flies, while placing third in the NCAA with 61 RBI. Kalawaia ranks tenth in the NCAA with 55 RBI, as well as leading UNCG with 21 stolen bases.
Four different players rank in the top 12 in runs scored this year. Kalawaia ranks third with 57, Spitznagel is sixth at 53, Dillon Stewart (Dunn, N.C./Brunswick CC) is eighth at 52, and Woody has scored 51. Stewart and Woody are tied for the team-lead with nine home runs each. Jake Kusz (Durham, N.C./Riverside) is second on the squad with seven home runs on the year.
UNCG's weekend rotation will send Hunter Smith (Whiteville, N.C./Whiteville), Matt Frisbee (Candler, N.C./Enka) and Keaton Haack (Greensboro, N.C./Pitt CC) to the hill. Smith has served as the Friday night starter during the season, and will start his 12th game of the year Friday evening. Smith has worked in a team-high 68.0 innings, including a complete game. The redshirt junior has earned a 6-1 record with a 4.50 earned run average.
Frisbee will start his 12th game of the year, previously working on Sunday afternoons. Frisbee has earned a 3-3 record with a 5.04 ERA. The freshman has worked in 50.0 innings, and has struck out 40 hitters. Frisbee tossed one complete game shutout, going 7.0 innings against Furman in a shortened game because of the SoCon's run rule. Haack has started in seven games this year, including two as a weekend starter. Haack originally worked as the midweek starter for five games before working in two weekend games against East Tennessee State and Samford. Haack has earned quality starts in two of the last three games and has earned a 3-2 record, to go with a 3.51 ERA.
The Spartans have five relievers who had at least 10 appearances on the year. Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) has worked in 25 games, with one start on the year. He has worked in 59.2 innings, second-most of any pitcher on the team. The right hander has earned a 6-0 record to go with a 2.26 ERA while earning one save. Wantz has also struck out a team-high 74 hitters, while holding opponents to a .200 average against. Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) has served as UNCG's closer. Sykes has appeared in 22 games and 35.1 innings. The sophomore has earned 43 strikeouts, as well as striking out at least one batter in 17-straight appearances. Sykes has earned a 3-2 record to go with four saves.
Woody has worked as a two-way player for the Spartans, making 15 appearances on the hill. The right hander has worked in 20.1 innings, earning a save and holding opponents to a .194 average. Woody has struck out 21 hitters while earning a 3.98 ERA. Ben Kerner (Cary, N.C./Brunswick CC) has appeared in 19 games this year, earning a 3-0 record. Kerner has worked 24.1 innings, striking out 18 batters.
Easton Welch (Randleman, N.C./Randleman) has appeared in 11 games, working 10.0 innings. Bryce Hensley (Asheville, N.C./Catawba Valley CC) has made three appearances out of the bullpen, having started ten games on the year. Hensley has worked 56.0 innings, striking out 38 batters. Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) has worked in 10 games out of the bullpen, to go with six midweek starts. Lewis has earned a 1-1 record in 36.0 innings, striking out 36 batters on the year.
The Terriers enter the weekend series with a 26-21 record, including an 8-7 mark in Southern Conference play. Prior to the start of the season, the Terriers were picked to finish third in the SoCon in both preseason polls. In their last ten games, the Terriers are 6-4 after falling to UNC Asheville on Wednesday night. Prior to Wednesday evening, Wofford has won eight of nine before dropping a series to the Dayton Flyers at home.
Derek Hirsch leads the Wofford offense, hitting for a .359 average in 41 games this year. The senior infielder has went for extra bases just three times, but has driven in 20 runs and scored 22 more. Brett Hash has provided the power in the Wofford lineup, leading the Terriers with eight home runs and driving in 47 runs on the year. Hash has started 43 games this year, and has scored 30 runs. Alec Paradowski leads the Terriers in runs scored, having touched home 45 times this season, while driving in 28 runs. McClain Bradley has been a consistent player for Wofford this season. The sophomore outfielder has scored 27 runs, drove in 27, legged out three triples to go with 11 doubles. Bradley has stolen a team-best 18 bases on the year. The Terriers have used 13 different players who have appeared in at lease 27 games this year.
Matthew Milburn leads the Terriers on the mound. The SoCon preseason Pitcher of the Year has started 11 games, going a team-high 71.2 innings. Milburn leads the SoCon with 77 strikeouts this year. The right hander has earned a 5-4 record to go with a 4.52 Earned Run Average. The senior has earned six quality starts on the season, including a complete game victory over Cornell earlier this season. Against SoCon opponents, Wofford is 3-3 when Milburn takes the hill, including winning the last three contests. Jacob Condra-Bogan is set to start Saturday's matchup. Condra-Bogan is a junior right hander who will start his first Saturday game of the season this weekend. The junior has worked in 59.1 innings, with his longest outing being 6.0 innings on three occasions, all Wofford wins. Wofford's Sunday starter has yet to be determined. Elliot Lance as started three games, and appeared in 21 more, with 60.1 innings pitched. Austin Higginbotham has started six games, thrown in 25.2 innings, going 0-4 in that time. Will Stillman was named to preseason SoCon first team as a relief pitcher, and has lived up to the hype. Stillman has earned a 3-2 record with a 1.88 ERA. The senior right hander has earned nine saves in 20 appearances, working in 28.2 innings. Jordan Accetta has earned the most appearances for the Terriers, coming out of the bullpen 25 times this year. Accetta has struck out 32 hitters and allowed only 10 extra base hits.
