GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three UNCG men's golfers finished under par as the Spartans placed 10th overall in their first event of the season Tuesday at the rain-shortened VCU Janney Invitational at The Country Club of Virginia on the Tuckahoe Creek Course. UNCG returns to action October 3-4 when it travels to the Wolfpack Fall Collegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Club.
Juniors Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) and Joseph Cansler (Clemmons/Surry CC) finished in a tie for 18th overall at 3-under par 141 while senior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) was 26th overall at 1-under par 143. This marks the first time since the Auto Trader Collegiate in 2014 that UNCG has seen three golfers in the lineup finish under par.
Stockwell finished with a 3-under par 141 as he opened with an even-par 72 in round one before carding a 3-under par 69 in round two. He finished Tuesday with six birdies, three bogeys and nine par scores. Cansler opened his UNCG career with a 3-under par 69 in round one before posting an even-par 72 in round two. He recorded four birdies Tuesday and finished with a team-best 10 birdies in the 36 holes of golf.
McGlone finished at 1-under par 143 for the week as he opened with an even-par 72 before carding a 1-under par 71. He notched five birdies, four bogeys and nine pars in the round Tuesday, including four straight pars from holes No. 2-5.
Virginia Tech won the event with a 28-under par score of 548 (276-272) while James Madison was second with 18-under par 558 and East Carolina was third at 16-under par 560. Joey Lane of Virginia Tech and Ryan Cole finished tied for the lead at 10-under par 134. Lane won the playoff on the sixth hole to claim the individual title.
Freshman Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) finished tied for 55th overall in his first career collegiate event. Brightwell posted a 7-over par 151 as he opened with a 5-over par 77 before posting a 2-over par 74 Tuesday. Sophomore Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) rounded out the lineup with a 10-over par 154 (77-74) to finish in 68th place while Mark Johnston (Lewisville, N.C./West Forsyth) finished in 72nd place as an individual with a 13-over par 157 (77-80).
This marks the eighth straight year that UNCG has been part of the VCU Janney Invitational. Joining the Spartans in the 14-team field includes host VCU, Richmond, Boston College, West Virginia, Charlotte, George Washington, Virginia Tech, Maryland, East Carolina, James Madison, Old Dominion, Iowa State and Radford.
