Men's Basketball Travels To VMI For Saturday Matinee On ESPN3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's basketball carries its three-game wining streak into Lexington, Va., Saturday afternoon as the Spartans take on VMI in Southern Conference action. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start at Cameron Hall and will be broadcast on ESPN3 and the ESPN App with Wade Branner and Grafton Young on the call. Additionally, the game will be radio broadcast on the TuneIn App and online via www.uncgspartans.com/radio with Paul Roper on the call.

 The Spartans are coming of one of their biggest wins of the season Tuesday night when they went into East Tennessee State and knocked off the first-place Buccaneers by an 83-79 margin. The victory was the Spartans' third in a row on the year and UNCG became the first team this season to defeat preseason No. 1 Chattanooga and No. 2 ETSU.

The Spartans are 3-2 on the road this season, including 2-0 in league play with wins at The Citadel and ETSU. UNCG is averaging 75.2 points per game and allowing 66.1 points per game against. The Spartans are shooting 46.3 percent (491-of-1060) from the field and 40.5 percent (170-of-420) from 3-point land.

Sophomore guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) leads the team in scoring at 14.0 points per game, including 19.0 points per game in league play. Alonso is shooting 45.5 percent (51-of-112) from the field and 89.6 percent (43-of-48) from the free throw line. He is averaging 23.7 points per game during the three-game winning streak, shooting 65.7 percent (23-of-35) from the field, 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from distance and 93.7 percent (15-of-16) from the free throw line.

Senior guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) is second on the team in scoring at 12.1 points per game. Baldwin leads the team with 78 assists and 36 steals while shooting 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from 3-point land and 78.4 percent (40-of-51) from the free throw line.

Senior center R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco) is third on the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game while leading the team on the glass at 6.4 rebounds per game. White is shooting 53.2 percent (75-of-141) from the field. Junior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) rounds out the Spartans in double figure scoring at 10.4 points per game. Smith is fourth on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game and second on the team with 31 made 3-pointers.

Sophomore guard Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) chips in 8.2 points per game and is shooting 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from 3-point land. Redshirt freshman James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) is second on the team on the glass at 6.4 rebounds per game while adding 5.9 points per game. Junior forward Jordy Kuiper (Groningen, Netherlands/Canaries Basketball Academy) adds 6.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

VMI enters Saturday's game with a 4-11 overall record and a 1-3 mark in the Southern Conference. The Keydets are 4-2 at home this season and 0-9 on the road. VMI is coming off a 79-78 victory Thursday night over Western Carolina, snapping a four-game skid. The Keydets' three other wins came against Southern Virginia, Charleston Southern and Frostburg State. VMI is averaging 68.2 points per game and allowing 77.1 points per game. The Keydets are shooting 41.0 percent (363-of-885) from the field and 31.7 percent (128-of-404) from 3-point land.

Guard QJ Peterson leads the Keydets in scoring at 18.5 points per game. Peterson also leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game and 40 assists. He is shooting 31.8 percent (35-of-110) from 3-point land and 75.6 percent (59-of-78) from the free throw line. Julian Eleby is second on the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game ... Eleby leads the team with 40 made 3-pointers, hitting at 35.7 percent. Trey Chapman rounds out the Keydets in double figures scoring at 10.3 points per game while grabbing 4.9 rebounds per game.

Saturday's game marks the 20th meeting all-time between UNCG and VMI. The Spartans hold an 11-8 advantage in the all-time series, including a 3-1 record since the Keydets returned to the Southern Conference in 2014-15. Last season, UNCG posted an 85-68 victory over VMI at home before suffering an 86-72 loss in Lexington to VMI last February. UNCG connected on 50 percent (56-of-112) from the field in the two games, 35.3 percent (18-of-51) from 3-point land and 84.4 percent (27-of-32) from the free throw line. VMI connected on 40.6 percent (52-of-130) from the field, 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from distance and 77.1 percent (27-of-35) from the charity stripe. The Spartans committed 27 turnovers in the two games, compared to just 13 miscues for the Keydets.

White paced the Spartans against the Keydets last season with 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He connected on 68 percent (17-of-25) from the field in the two games. Alonso averaged 14.0 points per game while Baldwin chipped in 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. Smith averaged 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game against the Keydets.
