Gontram Smacks Two Dingers as Softball Makes it Four Wins in a Row

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CONWAY, S.C.- UNCG softball kept the good times rolling at the Battle at the Beach, defeating Rider for the second time in as many days before taking down the host Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina in the night cap to improve to 4-0 at the tournament.

In the first game of the day, Mackenzie Winslow (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) stymied Rider and six different Spartans registered an RBI as the Blue and Gold shutout the Broncs 6-0.

Seeing her first action of the season, Winslow allowed just five hits in her seven innings of work to earn the complete game shutout. The junior only struck out one batter but made good use of her defense to put away the Broncs.

Rachael McClaskey (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) saw the ball well all day at the plate, going three-for-four with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage) continued her hot streak to start of her freshman campaign, going one-for-two at the dish with a homer, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.

The Spartans opened up scoring in the second inning. UNCG drew three walks in the frame's first five at-bats, with Rebbeca Kale's (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) base on balls occurring with the bags full. Kayleigh Willis (Birginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) followed up with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./Stony Brook) for the second run of the inning.

The third inning started off with a leadoff triple by McClaskey, who came home on a sacrifice fly to center by Gabrielle Cubbage (Fleton, Del./Lake Forest). One batter later, Gontram tattooed a Delany DeMello offering, clobbering a home run over the wall to put UNCG up 4-0.

The Spartans scratched across another run in the fourth, with Jasmine Palmer (Biltmore Lake, N.C./Florida State) coming home on a throwing error by the Rider shortstop. The final run of the game came across in the sixth as Palmer doubled home Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex).

With a six-run cushion in hand, Winslow retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to earn her first victory of the season.

Taking to the circle for Game Two was Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett), who went the distance allowing a single earned run on six hits, sitting down eight Chanticleers via strikeout as the Spartans upended Coastal Carolina 2-1.

UNCG only mustered two hits off of the Coastal pitching staff but made one of them count in a big way. After a McClaskey walk with one away in the fourth, Gontram put a charge into one and sent it cascading over the left field wall to put the Spartans up 2-0.

The Chanticleers answered in the bottom half with a Timi Tooley homer to straight away center field. However, Bazonski slammed the door shut, making sure that was all the damage the host team would do.

The Spartans and Chanticleers will face off in a rematch on Sunday, duking it out at 12:30 p.m. A link to live stats is available at UNCGSpartans.com.
