Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – Marshall scored early and often Tuesday against UNCG, stampeding over the Spartans 13-3 in a five inning game at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) received the loss, allowing 13 runs (nine earned) on 14 hits and a walk. Kyle Bouplon (Wilson, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) came on in relief to throw one complete inning, allowing one hit and striking out three.
The Thundering Herd were rolling early, scoring a run in the first and adding three more unearned runs in the second. Marshall tacked on two more in the third inning to take a commanding 6-0 advantage.
UNCG went to work in the third frame to cut into the Marshall lead. The Spartans loaded the bases with a walk, a throwing error and another base on balls and Sidney Grkman (Salisbury, N.C./Jesse Carson) wore a pitch on the shoulder to bring home the first run of the game for the Blue and Gold. During the next at-bat, Rebecca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) sent a liner to center field that was deep enough to score Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) for a sacrifice fly.
The Thundering Herd, though, snuffed out the momentum quickly, striking for three runs in the fourth to open the lead back out to 2-9.
Thanks in part to a pair of Spartan errors, the Thundering Herd came back with four more runs in the fifth, going ahead 13-2. Wright led off the bottom half with a solo shot to straight-away center field but by the game had been well decided.
UNCG won't have to stew over the loss for long, heading to Boone, North Carolina Wednesday for a doubleheader against Appalachian State beginning at 4:00 p.m. Links to live coverage are available at UNCGSpartans.com.
