Softball’s Offense Stymied in 7-2 Loss to Charlotte

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG was unable to overcome a strong outing from Charlotte starting pitcher Haley Wiseman as the Spartans were defeated 7-2 Tuesday night at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

Mackenzie Winslow (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) made her third start of the year, taking the loss after pitching 2.2 innings and allowing three runs on four hits and a pair of walks. Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) made her first appearance of 2017, throwing 4.1 innings of relief and allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out two.

With the two teams deadlocked in a 0-0 tie, Haley Pace gave the 49ers the lead with a two-run homer off of the Spartan statue in center field. Charlotte added a run later in the inning on a bloop double by Emma Ocker over the head of Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage), who was playing in shallow left field.

That ended Winslow's day and brought Bryden in for her first action of the 2017 season. Bryden surrendered an infield single but got Erin Powers to foul out to end the frame.

The 49ers extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth as Grace Beatty tagged Bryden for a solo shot over the center field fence.

UNCG was completely stymied by Haley Wiseman for much of the game, being held without a hit until the six inning. However, the Spartans started to crack the armour of Wiseman in that sixth frame.

Jasmine Palmer (Lake Biltmore, N.C./Florida State) got things started with a double to the gap in right-center and Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) was walked in the next at bat before Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) laced a single to center. Two batters later, Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford N.Y./Stony Brook) plated Overdiep with a sacrifice fly.

Wiseman, though, was able to calm down and hold the Spartans to two runs in the inning and the 49ers came back with three runs in the top of the seventh to snuff out the Spartan momentum. UNCG put two on base in the seventh but were unable to do any further damage.
