Volleyball Bounces Back with a 3-0 Win Over The Citadel Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C.– UNC Greensboro women's volleyball team (10-12, 4-6 Southern Conference) bounced back with sweep over The Citadel (8-13, 3-7 SoCon) 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) by scoring the final five points in the final set Saturday in Fleming Gymnasium for the “Dig Pink” match.

“We came out with great focus,” head coach Corey Carlin said.  “We knew that net presence was going to be big for us and also being balanced offensively.  I thought we did a really nice job.”

Sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch and freshman outside hitter Anne Schölzel led the team with nine kills each, while senior setter Allison Penner led the team with a match-high 36 assists and added five digs and three blocks and junior defensive specialist Mandy Garvens and freshman defensive specialist Stephanie Meysembourg led the team with eight digs each.

Schölzel recorded a .529 hitting percentage, while sophomore middle hitter Lauren Robeck added eight kills with a .412 hitting percentage, three digs and four blocks and junior outside hitter Emily Keilen and junior middle hitter Mikaela Weidmann each added seven kills.  Weidmann recorded a .538 hitting percentage and added a match-high five blocks.

The Spartans scored 18 of the first 30 points in the first set to take a six-point lead, 18-12, but the Bulldogs scored three of the next four points to cut the lead to four points, 18-14.  UNCG scored seven of the final nine points to win the set by nine points.

The Citadel scored nine of the first 16 points in the second stanza to take a two-point lead, 9-7, but the Spartans scored the next five points to take a three-point lead, 12-9.  The Bulldogs scored five of the next seven points to tie the set at 14, but UNCG scored the next seven points to recapture the lead by seven, 21-14.  The Citadel scored the next three points to cut the lead to four points, 21-17, but the Spartans scored four of the final six points to win the set by six points.

The Citadel scored six of the first 11 points in the final frame to take a point lead, 6-5, but the Spartans scored 12 of the next 20 points to take a three-point lead, 17-14.  The Bulldogs scored eight of the next 11 points to take a two-point lead, 22-20, but UNCG scored the final five points to win the set by three points and to win the match.

The Bulldogs were led by Mellanie King with a match-high 11 kills, Megan Fuhr with 25 assists and with 13 digs for a double-double.

The Spartans finish the three-match homestand with Western Carolina Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
