Softball Shuts Out Charlotte 8-0 on the Road

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (25-7) extended its winning streak to 10 games with an 8-0 victory over Charlotte (11-18) on Wednesday evening at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium. The current Spartans' victory streak ranks tied for third-longest in program history, matching streaks done in both 1992 and 2002.

The Spartans took the lead in the third inning. With one-out Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) singled through the left side and Gabi Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) walked. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) knocked in Matthijs with a single that dropped just inside the right field line. Cubbage then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River).

The next inning UNCG scored four runs for a 6-0 lead. Becca Kale (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) singled through the left side with one out that was followed by a double down the left field line by Jordan Gontram (Wake Forest, N.C./Heritage). Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) dropped a single over the shortstop to allow Kale to score. After Overdiep stole second base and Matthijs walked to load the bases, Cubbage knocked in Gontram on a single to left field. Sholtes brought in another run on a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Overdiep to race home. The last run came on a RBI-single up the middle by Bryden.

UNCG added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. After leadoff pinch-hitter Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) was hit by a pitch and stole second base, she scored on a double to left center by Jasmine Palmer (Cander, N.C./ Florida State). A two-out single up the middle by Overdiep produced the second run.

Bryden (10-1) allowed no runs, one hit and no walks with nine strikeouts and retired the side in all but the fifth inning. Kylie Bouplon (Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) recorded the last three outs and gave up three hits and no walks with a strikeout.

The Spartans had 11 hits from eight different batters. Matthijs, Kale and Overdiep collected two hits. Overdiep also had two RBIs along with Sholtes and Bryden.

UNCG will face Western Carolina next for the first road Southern Conference weekend series of the season, starting with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m.
