Baseball Wraps up Home Stand with North Carolina A&T and Charlotte

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball will wrap up a nine-game home stand this week, welcoming North Carolina A&T and Charlotte to the UNCG Baseball Stadium Monday and Tuesday evenings, with first pitch at 6 p.m. for both games. The Spartans are 14-3 at home on the season and are 6-1 on the current home stand.

The Spartans own a 43-7 record in the all-time series with North Carolina A&T. Monday's game is a rescheduled contest from last Wednesday when the teams were scheduled to meet up at First National Bank Field, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. In the last meeting at the UNCG Baseball Stadium, the Spartans earned a 6-2 win in 2016.

Charlotte has the edge in the all-time series with UNCG, 12-6. The teams have met just once in Link Jarrett's tenure, with the 49ers earning a 2-1 win in the 2015 season. Prior to that meeting, 2002 had been the last matchup, with UNCG earning a 13-12 win.

The Spartan pitching staff ranks second in the Southern Conference with a 4.12 staff ERA. The team leads the league with a combined 10 saves, led by Andrew Wantz's six. The Spartans have used two midweek starters on the season. Jake Mayhew has started four games, earning a 1-0 record. Dan Loats has gotten the ball in a pair of midweeks. Loats has a 3.79 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 19.0 innings.

Trejo, Andrew Moritz and Dillon Stewart lead the Spartan offense that continues to be one of the top in the nation and the Southern Conference. Trejo leads the conference with a .434 average this season, and leads the team with nine doubles and four triples with 31 RBI. Moritz hits at a .426 average with seven doubles, three triples, three long balls and 27 RBI on the year. Dillon Stewart leads the team with seven homers in 26 games. Stewart is hitting at a .390 average with eight doubles.

The Aggies are 13-14 on the season but enter having won four-straight games, including a three-game sweep of Savannah State over the weekend. A&T hits at a .249 team average, led by Perry Hunt. Hunt has a .321 average with three homers, a triple, five doubles and 12 RBI. Dawnoven Smith leads the Aggies with 14 RBI in 18 games, hitting at a .214 average. Milton Rivera and Adan Ordonez each have driven in 12 runs on the season. Rivera leads the team with three triples and has hit three homers.

A&T's pitching staff has been tough this season, earning a 3.86 team ERA. Josh Stikeleather has earned two saves and a 2-1 record in 26.0 innings of work. His 0.69 ERA leads the team as he's allowed just two earned runs. Josh Bottenfield has been another key reliever for the Aggies. Bottenfield has made a team-high 18 appearances, earning a 2-2 record and a save in 26.1 innings. He holds opponents to a .216 average against with 18 strikeouts.

The 49ers lost back-to-back games to close out their weekend with UAB. Charlotte is 15-12 on the season and 3-5 away from the Queen City. Harris Yett leads a powerful Charlotte offense. Yett hits at a .404 average with six doubles, six homers and a team-high 26 RBI. Jackson Mims adds a .375 average with five homers, two triples, six doubles and 22 RBI. Overall, the 49er offense hits at a .305 team average with 21 homers and have scored 189 runs, averaging 7.0 per game.

Charlotte owns a 5.29 team ERA. Key relievers for the 49ers include Matt Horkey, Jonah Patten and Colby Bruce. Honkey owns a 4.02 ERA in 15.2 innings of work with eight strikeouts. Patten is 1-1 in nine relief appearances and a pair of starts. He's earned three of Charlotte's five saves, tossing 17.1 innings and striking out 17 hitters. Bruce is 2-1 with 12 appearances and two starts. Bruce has logged 16.1 innings with 12 strikeouts.
