UNCGÂ / Elon |
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team didn't have much time to get comfortable at home. By the time the Spartans propped their feet up on the coffee table, went food shopping, and washed clothes it was time to hit the road again.
Â
After winning two games in three days at the Greensboro Coliseum, the Spartans begin a stretch where they will play four of their next five and six of their next eight contests in foreign facilities beginning Saturday with a visit to Elon's Schar Center for a matinee.
Â
The good thing about this trip and Tuesday's visit to North Carolina A&T is the Spartans can get both places round trip on one tank of gas.
Â
The undefeated Phoenix pose the latest challenge for the Spartans, who play their second true road game of the season.
Â
During their two wins over Norfolk State and USC Upstate, UNCG's defense was at its snarling best by allowing 52 points per contest, 35.3 shooting and stifling them after intermission. UNCG held Norfolk State to 20 points in the second half. Two days later, UNCG opened the second half on an 11-1 run after intermission to provide the needed separation for victory.
Â
After becoming the ninth player in UNCG program history to score 1,500 career points, senior guard
Isaiah Miller didn't play in the win over USC Upstate. No problem. The Spartans got scoring from 10 different players to beat USC Upstate.
Â
Sophomore
Khyre Thompson has sizzled the last three games for UNCG. In two home games this week, Thompson averaged 14 points and made 5 of 6 3-pointers (83.3 percent). He is seventh in the Southern Conference in 3-point field goal percentage.
Â
Junior
Kaleb Hunter, who leads the SoCon in offensive rebounding, averaged 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game in the two home games. Junior
Mohammed Abdulsalam was a rock for the Spartans, scoring nine points and finishing with six rebounds each in both victories.
Â
Senior
Hayden Koval has 289 career blocked shots and he leads the SoCon in that category. Sophomore
Keyshaun Langley scored nine points – all in the second half – in the win over USC Upstate.
Â
Members of the Colonial Athletic Association, Elon has defeated North Carolina Wesleyan, High Point, and Campbell this season. In Elon's latest victory, a 66-56 conquest of Campbell,
Hunter McIntosh led the way for the Phoenix, posting a season-high 23 points and seven rebounds, while knocking down all eight of his free throws. Â
Â
McIntosh is averaging 20.7 points per game. He is shooting 44.8 percent from 3-point distance (13-for-29) and 93.8 percent from the foul line (15-for-16). Jerald Gillens-Butler is scoring at a 15.7 point per game clip.
Â
Also in the win over Campbell, Hunter Woods chipped in a season-high 11 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
Kris Wooten finished with season-highs in points (12), rebounds (3) and threes (4) for the Phoenix.
