Two Cumbie Home Runs Lead Spartans Past Holy Cross

Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNCG softball wrapped up their trip to the Winthrop Softball Tournament with an 11-7 win over the Holy Cross, Sunday afternoon. The win marks the first in series history against the Crusaders. The bats came alive at the right time, scoring 10+ runs for the first time this season. Pitcher Morgan Scott recorded another complete game, along with 12 strikeouts. With 36 on the season, the freshman from Irmo, S.C. ranks among the top-20 in Division I.

"Makenna and Delaney really sparked our offense," said head coach Janelle Breneman. "They both stepped up when we needed it. Delaney, with her performance today, showed why she's such a special player. Makenna has taken great ownership of the leadoff spot and she's taking advantage of that opportunity early this season."

The Spartans opened up the game with four-straight hits. Makenna Matthijs (3-4, three runs scored) knocked a leadoff double to get the party started early in Rock Hill. A Delaney Cumbie single put runners at the corners, bringing up a red-hot Jasmine Palmer to the dish. The redshirt senior delivered an RBI single through the right side to score Matthijs from third.

Holy Cross bounced back in the top of the fifth. Following a single and a walk, Crusaders' Bengston ripped a three-run home run to take a 6-5 lead.

With seven RBI's, Cumbie (3-4, seven RBI's, three runs scored) set a new career-high, thanks to two home runs, showing the offensive power this 2020 team possesses. A three-run homer in the bottom half of the second gave the team some breathing room early on. The 2019 first team All-SoCon selection didn't get complacent, ripping a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to break a 6-6 tie and put the Crusaders' on the ropes.

Holy Cross loaded the bases in the seventh and scored one on a wild pitch. Scott was able to stay cool, calm and collected and struck out infielder Alyssa Gutierrez to end the rally bid and secure the victory.
