GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women's basketball's quest for a SoCon season title will come on the final day of the regular season this year, after falling to hosts Samford 69-57 this Thursday.Â
The Spartans started 1-for-4 from the floor, but hit five of their next 10 to finish the first quarter with 14 points. Nadine Soliman was responsible for half of UNCG's point total in the opening quarter, with the Bulldogs holding the 15-14 lead after 10 minutes.Â
The UNCG defense held Samford to just two buckets during the first nine minute of period number two, before the home squad scored a quick five points in the last 35 seconds of the quarter. The Spartans took their first lead of the night with two minutes remaining in the half, with Aja Boyd scoring 11 points in the period. Samford's late field goals would grab the home team a 29-26 lead before the break however, with the Spartans scoring 14 of their 26 in the paint during the opening 20 minutes.
The hosts would get hot offensively at the start of the third quarter, hitting 8-for-10Â from the field and bumping their lead up to 54-44 despite the Spartans scoring 18.
Samford led by as many as 16 before the end of the game, with the final ending 69-57 in favor of the Bulldogs. Te'ja Twitty scored 10 points with five rebounds in the second half alone, but it wouldn't be enough, as the Spartans' SoCon record fell to 9-4 on the season. UNCG is now tied with both Samford and Chattanooga for the top spot in the conference as the three teams will fight it out for the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament on the final day of the regular season.Â
