Spartans Walk It Off In 15

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – UNCG baseball earns a walk-off win for a second straight week with Spencer Smith's 15th inning RBI single putting an end to the longest game in program history.

Both teams would go scoreless through the first three innings, with starting Spartan right-hander Jeremiah Triplett facing one over the minimum over that span. The senior struck out six App State batters during his 4.1 inning start, giving up a single earned run and just one knock during his time on the bump.

The Mountaineers grabbed the first lead of the afternoon for the third straight day, driving in a single run on an RBI groundout. The Spartans responded with a big bottom half however, hanging up four runs on four hits. Third baseman Caleb Webster led the frame off with a triple to right center, before coming home for the tying run on a wild pitch in the ensuing at bat.

A walk from Hogan Windish and a single from Spencer Smith set up an RBI opportunity for Zack Budzik, who responded with his team's second three-bagger of the inning to drive in two more. David Flores would bring home his teammate with a deep double that deflected off the glove of the App State center fielder.

A pair of sac flies in the sixth and seventh innings gave the home side a 6-2 advantage going into the eighth, but a pair of Mountaineer runs crossed home to bring the visitors back within a pair.

Taking over for Triplett in the fifth, righty Alex Hoppe inherited a pair of runners in hist first frame, getting his team to the sixth on a strike out and fly out. Hoppe retired five of the first six batters he faced before surrendering those two runs in the eighth. He finished the afternoon with five strikeouts and a single base on balls.

The Mountaineers would score for a third straight inning however, forcing extra innings for the Spartans for the first time this year off a pair of runs in the top half of the ninth.

With both sides going scoreless in the 10th, the contest seemed destined to fall in favor of the visitors after the Mountaineers tallied a go ahead run in the 11th. Windish came through with his second home run of the year in the bottom half however, tying things up at seven apiece with a no-doubter over the left field wall, whlie recording his third RBI of the last two days.

UNCG and App State combined for a single hit from the 12th-14th, before designated hitter Spencer Smith delivered the walk-off knock the Spartans needed to take home an 8-7 win in the bottom of the 15th.

Caleb Webster dropped a single into right field, followed by a walk from Windish to put the senior into scoring position. Smith jumped on the first pitch he saw in his seventh at bat, delivering a hard-hit single to left field to drive home the game-winner and give UNCG its second walk-off win of the past two weeks.

Junior Austin Parsley received the win after coming on in the 10th. The right-hander inherited a pair of runners but would get out of the inning on a groundout, pop up and a strikeout. Parsley went on to toss six full innings, while surrendering just a single earned run, holding the Appalachian State batters to just one hit and three walks, and striking out a career-high of six.

Things To Know
-- Spencer Smith has an RBI in every game he's started this season. He's hitting 5-for-14 (.357) while driving in six runs over the three games he's made the starting lineup
-- Left fielder Gregory Hardison extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games, while his eight at bats tie a single game program record for an individual
-- The Spartans' 15 hits were a season-high, with nine UNCG players collecting hits. Webster went 3-for-4 at the plate with a game-high three runs
-- UNCG's 17 Ks were also a season-best, the most batters they've struck out in a single game since the 20 they recorded over 13 innings against Penn last year (3/2/19)

Coming Up Next
UNCG preps for yet another ACC matchup in the midweek, traveling to Chapel Hill to play against No. 20 North Carolina. The Spartans are 6-17 against the Tar Heels all-time, falling to UNC on the road last April.
