UNCG Hangs 10 To Open Series With A Win

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – UNCG baseball grabs its eighth win of the season after delivering a 10-2 decision over visiting UMES in this weekend's series opener. Freshman Pres Cavenaugh came a home run shy of the cycle, while Ryan Caveness tallied a pair of RBI doubles and starting lefty Jake Lewis earned his first win of 2020.

UNCG spotted the visiting Shore Hawks a pair of runs in the third, but pulled them back in the bottom half. Ryan Caveness led off the frame with a hit by pitch, coming home in the ensuing at bat on a Jacquez Koonce double down the right field line. Caleb Webster drove in his eighth run of season later in the inning thanks to a groundout RBI, tying things up at two apiece before the start of the fourth.

The home team added four in the next inning with Caveness getting his first RBI double of the afternoon. After drawing a walk, Sam Koruschak moved over to third on a Pres Cavenaugh single before coming home on a squeeze bunt play. With Zak Budzik stealing second Caveness stepped into the box with a pair in scoring position, responding with a double to right and a three-run Spartan lead. Webster's second RBI of the night came on a sac fly to right, putting UNCG ahead by a 6-2 count, as all nine Spartan batters made a plate appearance in the fourth.

Giving up a pair of runs off of four hits, starter Jake Lewis settled in after the first three innings, holding the UMES batters scoreless over the next three frames, on the way to his first winning decision of the year. Striking out five over 6.0 IP of work, Lewis is on a streak of three straight quality starts and has an ERA of 2.70 on the year.

The Spartans added another two in the fifth, delivering three straight two-out knocks. Cavenaugh tallied his second hit of the night with a double to right center, before Budzik provided a single and Caveness grabbed his second RBI double of the night.

Cavenaugh would come within a home run of the cycle after recording the first triple of his career in the seventh, driving in Spencer Smith, who led off the frame with a pinch-hit single. Budzik wrapped up the Spartan scoring with his sac fly to bring in Cavenaugh, as UNCG finished off the Shore Hawks 10-2.

The Spartans move to 8-4 on the season, while scoring in double-digits for the second time this year. The side's eight-run differential is the biggest they've had in 2020, driving in their 10 runs off 12 hits overall.
