GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball program enjoyed a truncated season filled with memories, highlights, and sterling performances.
Shining moments of the spring included three wins over Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) programs Virginia, Clemson and North Carolina. In the win over North Carolina,
Delaney Cumbie, Kay Willis and
Samantha Lagrama hit home runs. Those blasts were a perfect compliment to
Kylie Bouplon's four strikeouts.
Hannah Kincer made a terrific catch in foul territory against Clemson that helped
Morgan Scott earn a complete-game victory. In leading the Southern Conference with 106 strikeouts, Scott punched out a season best 13 against Appalachian State.
This past week, the Spartans announced their 2020 team awards, as voted on by the players. In all, seven honors were awarded to eight different players.
Rookie of the Year: Morgan Scott
Scott made an immediate impact for the Spartans with a team-high eight complete games and two shutouts. She appeared in 15 games and made 11 starts. She led the SoCon with a 3.93 K/BB ratio and 9.2 K/7. She was 21st in Division I softball in strikeouts. Scott won eight games and had a 3.02 ERA. She earned SoCon Pitcher of the Month honors for February after tossing five complete games in the month alone and shutting out both Virginia and Oakland. In the win over Virginia, she had eight strikeouts. She had five double-digit strikeout performances.
Spartan Softball Way Award: Breanna Butcher
This is awarded to the player that displays leadership qualities on and off the playing field. Butcher was selfless, respectful, competitive and inspirational. In helping to make the rest of players around her better, Butcher was a valuable contributor to the Spartan success. She scored as a pinch-runner in games against North Carolina A&T and Dayton. This is the second consecutive year that she has received this recognition.

Most Outstanding Offense: Samantha Lagrama
A consistent force at the plate, Lagrama made 16 starts over 18 appearances and led the Spartans with a .347 batting average and .735 slugging percentage, which led the Southern Conference. Lagrama ranked second on the Spartan roster with six home runs overall, while her .33 home runs per game ranked 36th in all of Division I softball. She homered in three consecutive games against Fairfield and North Carolina A&T twice. She homered in each game of a doubleheader sweep of Northern Illinois.
Most Outstanding Defensive Award & Most Valuable Player: Delaney Cumbie
A two-way threat, Cumbie captured two awards for her excellent defense and consistent defense. She had the most significant impact on the Spartan success this season. She was second on the team with a .328 batting average and .638 slugging percentage, which was second in the SoCon. Her .518 on base percentage was a Spartan best and ranked second in the Southern Conference. She averaged just under a walk per game (0.95), which was ninth-best in Division I. Cumbie slugged five home runs and tied for a team lead with 19 runs batted in. She drove in seven runs in a win over Holy Cross.
Most Valuable Pitcher Award: Kylie Bouplon
Bouplon made nine appearances with seven starts. She was a perfect 6-0. Bouplon led the Spartans with a 2.62 earned run average. Her 29 strikeouts were second on the team. She also tossed four complete games. She won five consecutive games from Feb. 22 to March 7. Bouplon struck out six and allowed a run against. Also finished her fantastic career with three saves.
Scholar-Athlete Awards: Bouplon, Katie Stettler, Jordan Gontram, and Alex Rodriguez
They had the highest grade point averages on the team. This award recognizes self-discipline and the commitment to balancing academics and athletics.
