UNCG Dominates in 5-0 Shutout Over The Citadel

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team extends its program streak to 21-0 over Southern Conference (SoCon) foe The Citadel after a dominating 5-0 shutout Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Ten different Spartans recorded at least a point in UNCG's sixth shutout of the season.

From Eliza Radoll, one of five goal scorers
"This was an extremely huge team win. I can't explain how proud I am of this team, working day in and day out. Every person that is on the sideline and on the field works their butt off every day, every morning at 7 a.m. I am really happy that we are finally here, and it paid off."
On her goal
"Hannah Morton lined up for the shot and I knew she was either going to clip it back post or hit a banger. I wanted to be there on the back post and fair enough, it just trickled down to my foot and I tapped it in."
On the defense
"It was all about communication in this game. We are a solid back line, I think we have proved that in other games but, it feels nice to have a shutout. Our midfield was really tight today, they listened to our back line, they did great pressuring, our forwards were great. It wasn't just the back line, it's every person on this field, including AT (Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper) who is even behind us. It is a collective effort."

Records
UNCG: 3-4-6, 2-1-2 SoCon
The Citadel: 9-5-0, 3-3-0 SoCon

How it Happened:

  • 34:33 – Dalani Stephens played the ball to the left finding Caroline Woods. Woods dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box and sent a cross to Nicole Souply. At the top of the six-yard box, Souply scored off her left foot giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
  • 36:50 – Just over two minutes later, Maddy Gilhool took the ball down the left side of the field and played the ball off the left post for the initial shot, as the goalkeeper came out to play her. Nadia Wilson came charging in from the right side for the rebound and put it away for a 2-0 lead.
  • 56:40 – From about 25 yards out, UNCG's Hannah Morton launched a set piece, placing the ball just inside the six-yard box. Radoll beat a defender and sent the ball trickling over the goal line giving the Spartans a 3-0 advantage.
  • 58:00 – Stephens sent an outswinger for the Spartans' third corner kick of the game and Ashley Avelino found the back of the net heading it from about 12 yards out, 4-0.
  • 80:64 – Caroline Fiorella and Gabi Santora each had a hand in getting the ball to Caroline Woods. Woods then launched the ball from outside the 18-yard arc over the goalkeepers' outstretched hands for the Spartans' fifth goal of the game.

By the Numbers
  • Senior goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper recorded six saves, bringing her career total to 336.
  • With the shutout, Tyler-Cooper now has 24 career clean sheets.
  • Woods records her third goal in as many games.
  • Wilson scored her first-collegiate goal.
  • This is the Spartans' sixth shutout of the season.
  • UNCG leads the series against The Citadel 21-0.
  • With the zero in the back, this is the 13th shutout against the Bulldogs in program history.

From the Coaches' Box/Michael Coll, Head Women's Soccer Coach
On the Game
"Today felt like a must-win game for us. We played with real style today, which was nice. Scoring five goals made it a very entertaining game and the players really enjoyed it and they played some fantastic soccer."
Coming out against a 9-4 team, with the Spartans holding a 20-0 program record against them
"The Citadel coaching staff is really wonderful. Coach Traquair has really developed the program the past three years. We were expecting a tough team and we came out and outplayed them. I think that our performance today has been building for a while. Our possession of the ball reached a high level."
On the Spartans' team chemistry
"Each day our team chemistry is always unbelievable. The team approach today was extra special. Team chemistry here is always at a high level and that is a strong part of our foundation. The players are so put together."
Road trip to Wofford and Furman
"Furman is the conference champion from this past Spring and they have had a bit of an up and down season so far. But, playing Furman at Furman, that's a really tough place to get a result. Wofford is also a really good team. Like I said before, there are no easy points in the conference. You have to really play well to get any points at home or away. This double game weekend is as difficult as any double game weekend that we will ever face."

Pink Game
On Friday, October 1, the Spartans hosted VMI and sported bright pink socks and recognized and remembered those who have passed, are currently battling, and who are in remission from cancer.
