Longwood Advance: Cutler Has Big Goals

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Coming to a microphone near you will be Matthew Cutler, sooner rather than later.

The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) senior defender aspires of becoming a sports broadcaster or a radio personality once his soccer days are finished. Among his favorite broadcasters are Mike Breen and Ray Hudson. It could explain why the communications major is a fierce defensive force with the gift of gab.

As a defender, Cutler is consistently communicating, directing players, and making sure everything is settled in front of his keeper. During a stellar four-year career that was celebrated prior to Saturday's 3-0 win over Wofford, Cutler has witnessed the growth of the program under third-year head coach Chris Rich.

Cutler, who is originally from Pittsburgh, will have some inspiring stories to share while he's on the air.

He can speak to conquering adversity, the result of having three coaches in four years. He can also share how he overcame obstacles to help UNCG win a SoCon regular season championship in 2019, a Southern Conference Tournament championship this past spring, compete in the NCAA Tournament, and earn a national ranking that was as high as No. 16 this season.

"It's a lot of fun to be part of this program," Cutler said. "I enjoy the guys, day in and day out. All of the banter and all the jokes makes the team great to be around. It's just a down to earth environment. Nobody here feels they are more than the team. We all feel that our victories and personal accolades that we get comes from our team approach."

Cutler and the Spartans will take their sparkling show on the road for the final time during this enchanted regular season for a pair of games beginning at Longwood on Tuesday.

UNCG closes the regular season with a biggie Saturday night at East Tennessee State, a contest that presents another opportunity for Cutler to cement his legacy as one of the most accomplished student-athletes to wear a blue-and-gold uniform.

Over the last two years, UNCG has won an astounding 20 matches.

One of Cutler's career highlights was scoring a goal with a minute remaining last season to help UNCG earn a 1-1 tie against Mercer on the road.

The Spartans beat No. 2 Clemson and Coastal Carolina on the road last month. Those wins were highlights of a special season that still has a few chapters remaining.

"Our training is what makes the team able to showcase our talents every game," Cutler said. "Our toughest games are in training against each other. Our training environment is where it stems from and everything comes from there. We learn and grow from there each day, which is fun."
