LEXINGTON, Va. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's cross country team finished fourth out of 10 teams at the 2021 Southern Conference (SoCon) Championships Saturday at Lexington Country Club Golf Course, hosted by VMI. The squad matched their result from the 2021 spring championship.
The Spartans totaled 90 points, while Furman University won its ninth-straight title with 18 points. Samford University (83 points) and East Tennessee State University (86 points), placed second and third, respectively.
At the two-kilometer mark, UNCG sat third, with four Spartans in the top 25. UNCG placed as high as second bumping Samford down during the three-kilometer and 3.6-kilometer splits. The Bulldogs and the Bucs edged the Spartans at the finish line.
Graduate student
Ariana Garcia earned her second-career SoCon honor, taking home 14
th place with her time of 19.06.9. Garcia was named to the All-Conference second team and previously was named to the All-Freshman Team her first year.
Sophomore
Jenna Reiter wasn't far from Garcia, who bested her placement from last years' race, finishing in 16
th and clocking in a time of 19:16.3. After finishing 61
st at last years' Championship, classmate
Shay Soukup earned a top-20 spot, placing 19
th with a time of 19:24.3.
Senior
Jillian Felton rounded out the Spartans' top-25 finishes with a 24
th-place mark, crossing the finish line in 19:47.6. Senior
Chandler McCaslin ran the five-kilometer course in 19:54.0, placing 27
th out of the field of 78 competitors. This was her best finish at the championships and was the final Spartan to earn points for the team.
UP NEXT
The Spartans are scheduled to compete at the NCAA Southeast Regionals on Friday, November 12 in Louisville, Kentucky at the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, hosted by the University of Kentucky.
