BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team fell to Samford, 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-16 on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNCG jumped out to a 11-6 lead over Samford behind Kayla White, Gabriela McHugh, Grey Breen, Hannah Knier, and Brittany Wood.
- After extending their lead to six, the Spartans forced Samford to take the first timeout of the set.
- Samford never got within five of UNCG. The Blue and Gold coasted their way to 25, taking the first set, 25-16.
- The first timeout of the second set was the media timeout with Samford leading by two, 15-13. Breen and White led with two kills each.
- The Spartans came out of the first called one going on a 4-0 run to take the one-point lead, 20-19. Jocelyn Carter and Breen scored for the Blue and Gold.
- Samford would take set two, 25-23.
- Samford jumped out to a 15-13 lead, forcing the media timeout in the third set. Four Spartans scored in the opening run.
- The Spartans could not close the gap and fell in set three, 25-20.
- The fourth set had eight ties before the media timeout, Samford leading 15-11. White scored three times with two kills and an assisted blocked by Knier.
- Samford closed out the set and match, 25-16.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Kayla White and Grey Breen led the Spartans with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. White recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 18 digs to match.
- Gabriela McHugh dished out 36 assists in the match, bringing her career total to 2,485. She is now ranked sixth in the record books for all-time career assists.
- Jenna Wiggs followed White in digs for the match. Wiggs finished with 17 and Stephanie Meysembourg finished with 10, rounding out the double-digit digs.
- White and McHugh were the lone Spartans to have a solo block on the match with one each.
- Hannah Knier led the Blue and Gold with five block assists, followed by McHugh with three.
- Grey Breen led with four service aces in the match.
UPCOMING
The Spartans come home for a three-game home stand with Furman, Wofford, and Western Carolina. UNCG will honor their four seniors prior to Saturday's match against Wofford.
