Spartans Sweep Catamounts in Home Finale

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team will finish the 2021 season no lower than second place with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-22) win over the Western Carolina Catamounts for its home finale on Wednesday night.

The Spartans are now tied for first place with Mercer. Both teams are 11-4 in the Southern Conference (SoCon).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans jumped out to a dominant 18-7 lead over the Catamounts in the first frame. Elayne Grisbee and Grey Breen led the way with three points each.
  • UNCG held Western Carolina to 10 points in the first set, the second largest margin of victory this season.
  • The Spartans led the Catamounts by three, 15-12, heading into the media timeout in the second set.
  • Western Carolina cut the Spartans lead to two, 17-15, but a 5-1 run that included points from Brittany Wood, Grisbee, and Jocelyn Carter would put UNCG within three-points of taking a two-set lead, 22-17.
  • Kayla White ended the second set with her eight kill and put the Spartans within an arms reach of sweeping the series.
  • The Catamounts tied the final set at 12. The Blue and Gold made a statement and went on a 6-0 run led by White.
  • White ended the match with her 16th kill of the night.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jenna Wiggs led the team with 22 digs.
  • White joined Wiggs with double digit digs for her 20th double-double of the season.
  • The 3-0 win is the 11th sweep of the season for the Spartans.
  • With the win by the Spartans and Mercer losing to Samford, UNCG is now tied for first place in the SoCon with one more match to be played.
COREY CARLIN'S COURSE OF THOUGHT
"Anytime you win the last home game of the season, it's a good feeling.  I'm happy that our seniors left Fleming with a win in their final home match.  As a team, we did some really good things tonight and kept the pressure on Western.  Our offense was balanced, and our passing was consistent to give Gabby options in serve receive.   Now we'll turn our focus to finishing the regular season strong at the Citadel."

UPCOMING
The Spartans look to close out their historic season with a match at The Citadel on Saturday. The match is set for 7 p.m.
