Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by Rob Knox, Associate AD for Strategic Communications

Balanced Effort Helps UNCG Defeat North Carolina Wesleyan

GREENSBORO, N.C. – J.C. Tharrington and Bas Leyte had career-high scoring efforts to lead the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team to an 80-61 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan at the Greensboro Coliseum Wednesday night.

Leyte finished with 18 points. Jalen White added a season-best 16 points and Tharrington sank four 3-pointers for his 12 markers. Reggie Raynor capped UNCG's balanced performance with a one-handed baseline slam dunk late in the game that shook the Coliseum to its core.

For one night in this tension and turbulent-filled November, area cardiologists enjoyed a night off. After playing consecutive overtime games and several close contests, UNCG had a rare comfortable finish.

There was some angst especially when the Battling Bishops closed to within, 43-37, early in the second half. However, UNCG responded by scoring 13 straight points to earn the needed separation and raise its home record to 3-0.
Records
North Carolina Wesleyan 4-3
UNCG 5-2

Quotable
UNCG head coach Mike Jones on the victory.
"I didn't like the way we started the game. I didn't think we had the necessary energy out of the gate. We were able to ramp that up and in the second half is when I think we played UNCG basketball. I thought we made it tough on them and the ball pressure was good at times. And when we got a lead, we're not used to playing with a big lead, so we didn't maintain that for a little stretch, but overall I thought our intensity level after the beginning of the game was good."

Jones on balanced scoring and ball movement.
"I like the way our guys share the ball for the most part. It doesn't always translate into assist. We do get the kind of shots that we want to get. We come down and we want to get the best shot for our team in a possession. When we start to move the ball, we become dangerous as an offensive team. It was a thing of beauty when the ball moved from side to side and we shared it and a lot of guys were able to capitalize on that."

Final Word
Leyte on his career-high scoring evening.
"We talk about having level-five juice. So, I've just been working hard. I am not looking to score all the time. I've just been playing hard, and it's been working out for me for getting layups and scoring. I just want to keep playing hard and being aggressive and let the rest take care of itself."
