UNCG Back on Track With 66-56 Win over Maryland Eastern Shore

PRINCESS ANNE, MD. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team bounced back and secured a 66-56 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon at Hytche Center.

The Spartans broke out a new set of uniforms, all navy with gold accents, to face the Hawks for just the fourth time in program history.

Jaylynn Brown on the victory
"It is our first victory in a while, and we are looking forward to starting a new streak. We all came together, told each other to pick it up again and move forward from getting behind. My teammates helped me to dig myself out of a hole. I know it's been rough for the past few games, and they have helped me build my confidence up. They hit me when I was open and I have the confidence from them."

How It Happened
  • Freshman Nasia Powell gave UNCG a 3-0 lead with a basket from behind the arc, the first three-pointer of the game.
  • The Shore cut the deficit to two, 14-12, at the end of the first quarter with their second three-point bucket of the game.
  • A 13-7 run at the beginning of the second quarter extended the Spartans' lead to eight, 27-19.
  • With a 60-percent (6-for-10) three-point percentage, the Spartans were up eight, 34-26, heading into the locker room.
  • Both senior Jaylynn Brown and (3-for-3) and Powell (2-for-2) were perfect from downtown.
  • The Hawks saw their first lead of the game with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter, 40-38, after putting up 12-straight points.
  • UNCG responded quickly to take the lead back scoring eight-straight points, 46-40, including five free throws.
  • The Shore took a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, 49-48, but sophomore Khalis Cain gave the Spartans the advantage with a nice and-one play in which she was fouled after scoring on a jumper, 51-49.
  • Freshman Nitzan Amar added her own and-one fast-break series extending UNCG's lead to seven, 56-49, with 6:18 remaining.
  • The Spartans were up 12 points three times in the fourth quarter for their largest lead of the game.

Final Word
UNCG head coach Trina Patterson
"Our goal was for us to start a new streak. We were in a position to fight hard until the very end and not that we haven't done it before, but we were able to see a win as a result. I am really proud of JB (Jaylynn Brown) for her offense today and Nitzan has come back more aggressive and that was a really aggressive team. Maryland Eastern Shore is a good team and they have come back on all the teams they have played and cut it to three or four. It was very satisfying that we could come out on top especially on the road. Tribute to the entire team."

Coach Patterson on the versatility of the team
"We had people with four fouls early, but we have some versatile players who can play multiple positions and so we were able to switch and play zone. So, it wasn't that big of a problem because we have versatility in our team."
