GREENVILLE, S.C. - UNCG men's tennis opens the SoCon season with a loss this Sunday, falling to 2019's conference runner-ups Furman by a final of 7-0.
The Spartans dropped the doubles point with losses in each of the three pairings. The combination of
Nico Grewe and
Ollie Palmer lost 6-3 to Furman's top duo, while
Christopher Johns and
Alexander Zuckerman lost by the same score in the third seed.
Roger Rogowski and
Cooper Wyett forced an extra game in the second pairing, but were unable to take the tiebreaker.Â
UNCG was competitive in all of their singles matches. After his doubles partner fell in straight sets, Grewe took a loss in three while playing in the third seed. The Raleigh native secured the first set 6-1, before taking back-to-back 6-4 and 6-2 losses, with his season record moving to 1-1 in singles play.
Rogowski fell in two as well, while
Hugh Knapp forced a third with a 7-6 (10-8) win in the second. With the team decision already in hand, Knapp and his opponent played in a shortened tie-breaking set that went in favor of Furman's number two. Wyett went in similar fashion, taking the first set of his matchup 6-3 before a 6-4 loss forced a tie-breaker that was taken by a Paladin in the No. 6 matchup.
