Men's Tennis Stumbles In Home Opener With Charlotte

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG men's tennis takes a 6-1 loss to visiting Charlotte to open their home schedule, with the Spartans' lone point of the night coming from doubles play.

After dropping the first doubles match of the afternoon, the Spartans responded with back-to-back wins in their first and second seeds. Nico Grewe and Ollie Palmer were forced to an extra set with a 7-5 win on court one, while Roger Rogowski and Cooper Wyett clinched the point on court two. The pair were forced to a tiebreaker, collecting their team a point with a 7-2 victory.

The 49ers controlled singles play however, upsetting the Spartans' chances at a win with six match victories in individual matchups. After dropping their first five in straight sets, UNCG's fourth seed Nico Grewe was the last to finish on the day. The senior took the opening set of his match 6-4 before conceding by the same number in the following frame to force a third. Grewe and his Charlotte opponent Ben Wayand were equally matched as the pair required a tiebreaker in the deciding frame, but it was Wayand who emerged victorious in the 7-2 final.

The Spartans get back to conference play in just two days, with ETSU traveling to Greensboro. Sunday's match with the Bucs is the first of back-to-back days of competition for UNCG, with Radford coming to town on Monday.
