BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team earned its second consecutive victory by defeating Gardner Webb, 3-0, in a non-conference match Wednesday night.
The Spartans got goals from
Maycol Reyes,
Matthew Cutler, and
Chase Gilley to enjoy a happy bus ride back to campus. Reyes and Cutler scored in the first half as UNCG held a 2-0 advantage at intermission.
Theo Collomb also had an assist for the Spartans, who improved to 2-1 on the season.
"We were excellent tonight," UNCG head men's soccer coach
Chris Rich said. "Winning on the road is never easy, especially against a good team like Gardner-Webb, so I couldn't be happier for the team. The guys executed our game plan and played with a lot of energy all game.
Reyes scored in the sixth minute. Cutler doubled UNCG's advantage in the 39th minute. Gilley, who saw his first action of the season last week against Belmont-Abbey, concluded the scoring with a goal in the 78
th minute.
UNCG peppered Gardner Webb with 10 shots. The Spartan defense proved to be an impenetrable force. Goalie
Brendan Pulley earned the shutout for UNCG.
"I am most proud of the way we defended," Rich said. "We only conceded two shots on the night, and neither were on goal. To do that on the road against any team is impressive. It was also great to get some debuts tonight. Really happy for
Emmanuel Hagan and
Jack Bole.
Also great to see Maycol, Cutler, and Chase get their first career goal at UNCG. We got better tonight."
