Spartans Hit The Road For Mid-Week DH At Radford

GREENSBORO -- With its Southern Conference opener on the horizon this weekend, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) will play a non-conference doubleheader at Radford at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
 
The Spartans (13-6 overall) head into Radford Softball Stadium with a 4-0 record in road games so far this season. The Highlanders (8-13 overall) have been road warriors this season and are 2-0 at home.
 
UNCG sophomore third baseman Maycin Brown (.452, 3 HRs, 10 RBIs in 13 games) was named the SoCon's Player of the Week on Monday after a big four-games series against Elon. Brown went 8-for-13 with two doubles, a home, six RBIs and six runs scored. She has scored at least one run in 10 consecutive games.
 
Senior center fielder Makenna Matthijs leads a potent Spartans offense. She has started all 19 of UNCG's games and has hit safely in 13 of the last 14. Matthijs comes into this doubleheader batting .361 with four doubles, six home runs and team-highs of 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored.
 
Seniors Kayleigh Willis (.383, 7 doubles, 19 RBIs) and Jasmine Palmer (.377, 4 HRs, 16 RBIs) both boast on-base percentages of .500, while junior catcher Delaney Cumbie (.239, 5 HRs, 13 RBIs) has drawn 19 walks and ranks fifth in the nation with an average of 1.06 per game.
 
The Spartans are among the nation's best offenses with a team batting average of .308 and a rank of fifth in the nation with an average of 2.05 home runs per game.
 
Sophomore right-hander Morgan Scott (6-3, 2.75 ERA) had two wins and a save during the Elon series. She has struck out 69 in 56 innings. Meanwhile, freshman right-hander Alina Varga (6-0, 4.05 ERA) had 37 strikeouts in 36.1 innings, and opponents are batting just .239 against her.
 
Radford has won six of its last 11 games, and senior right-hander Jessie Marvin (3-8, 4.71 ERA) leads the Highlanders with 12 appearances.
 
Senior Sydney Fisher (.375, 6 doubles, 4 RBIs) leads Radford with 27 hits, 13 runs scored and seven stolen bases.
