GREENSBORO, N.C. - It's been over 15 years since UNCG women's tennis started a spring season with three straight wins, but the Spartans improved their current record to 3-0 during this Thursday's home opener with a 5-2 win against Radford. UNCG took five of six singles matches against the Highlanders, the second time they've taken five individual matchups in a single match this year.
After conceding the doubles point, the Spartans dominated in singles, with
Hanna Giddings and
Brianna Gomez both picking up their third match wins of the season. The two both took their individual matchups in straight sets on Thursday. Gomez put away Radford's No. 2 by consecutive sets of 6-3, while Giddings grabbed a win in the third seed on scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
Sophia Adams and
Eugenia Camacho were both dominant in their wins at the first and fifth seed respectively, surrendering just three games apiece over their own straight set wins. Adams blanked the Highlanders' top competitor in the first before clinching her second victory of the season on a 6-3 second. Camacho defeated her own opponent by successive scores of 6-1 and 6-2, collecting her second singles win of 2021 as well.
Freshman
Juliana Craft took her first loss at the collegiate level after opening her Spartan career with back-to-back wins, while
Emily Ory added her team's fifth and final point of the afternoon in a three-set victory.
After taking the first frame 6-4, the senior allowed the Radford No. 4 to draw level with a 6-2 win before the pair were forced into a tie-breaker in the third. Ory completed her second straight win as an individual with a 10-8 victory in that tie-breaker, as the Spartans finished 5-2 to the favorite.
UNCG will play the final match of their two-contest homestand this Sunday, hosting another Big South opponent in UNC Asheville. With a win over the Bulldogs, the Spartans will have already matched their win total from the COVID-shortened 2020 season and get revenge for the 4-3 loss they took to UNCA the previous spring.
