ELON, N.C. - UNCG baseball collects its seventh win of the 2021 season on Friday, defeating hosts Elon by a final of 7-3 on the road. Everyone in the Spartan lineup touched first against the Phoenix, with starting outfielder
Corey Rosier hitting a pair of home runs.
Corey Rosier didn't like the first pitch he saw on Friday night, but the Spartan leadoff man sent Elon starter Ben Simon's second pitch of the night over the right field wall for his second home run of the season.Â
UNCG forced the Phoenix starter from the game early after hanging an additional four runs in the top half of the second.
Robbie O'Neal and
Daniel Cerda each collected singles to give the Spartans a pair of base runners, before they were driven in on three straight two-out knocks.
Hogan Windish's seeing-eye single drove in his team's second run of the night, with
Pres Cavenaugh following up with his fourth double of the year. The pair were brought in on a third straight hit from
Spencer Smith, who collected two RBI for his effort, making it 5-2 before the third inning.
Making his third start of the campaign,
Austin Koehn held the Phoenix without a hit in the first two innings, before the hosts were able to collect a pair in the home half of inning number three. Elon continued to chip away at the Spartans' lead with another run in the fifth, before Rosier struck again in the sixth.Â
Similar to his first at bat, the transfer from Chipola College took the first pitch of his plate appearance before launching a shot off the scoreboard in left center. Rosier's second home run of the night was the outfielder's third of the year, putting him in a tie with Windish for a team-high, and gave his side another three-run lead. He would grab his fourth RBI of the evening in the top half of the eighth, scoring
Zack Budzik on an infield groundout.
Coming on during the fifth,
Jack Voigt provided the necessary relief for the Spartans to extend their lead, limiting Elon to a single hit over 3.1 innings on the bump. Voigt struck out three Phoenix batters to put himself in line for the win, facing just three over the minimum during his time on the bump.
The lefty's work on the mound setup an opportunity for righty
Brandon Stephens to come in and close, as the Phoenix were held scoreless over their last four frames of offense.Â
As a whole, the Spartan pitching staff sprayed six Elon knocks over nine innings, not allowing anything more than a single over the final 14 outs of the contest. The Spartans move to 7-2 on the year after their third win against Elon, taking a one-game advantage in the series.
>>> Rosier finished 3-of-5 at the plate, crossing home twice and driving in three runs, while O'Neal was 2-for-4 with a run scored
>>> The Spartans' offensive performance is their third this year with 10 or more hits. They are 3-0 in those contests, two of which have come against Elon
>>> Everyone in the UNCG lineup reached first safely, with
Josh Madole drawing a pair of walks. He's had a walk in all but one game this year, coming into Friday's contest ranked seventh in the nation when it comes to getting bases on balls
