With the bulk of its Southern Conference schedule on the horizon, UNCG plays host to Charlotte in a challenging non-conference tune-up at 2 p.m. Wednesday at UNCG Softball Stadium.
 
The original start time of the game was moved up three hours because of the threat of inclement weather.
 
The Spartans (18-13 overall, 3-3 SoCon) head into the game against the 49ers (21-9, 6-2 Atlantic-10) off a 10-3 victory over Longwood in the finale of their weekend series.
 
Sophomore right-hander Morgan Scott (9-6, 2.47 ERA) leads the Socon in wins and has struck out a league-high 124 batters in 99 innings. Scott ranks 26th in the nation in strikeouts, and her average of 8.8 strikeouts per seven innings is tied for 50th. Opposing hitters are batting just .198 against her.
 
Freshman right-hander Alina Varga (7-0, 4.07 ERA) is unbeaten in 12 appearances. Senior right-hander Hannah Stiltner has worked in 11 games with seven starts.
 
On offense, the Spartans are among the nation's top power-hitting teams, averaging 1.68 home runs per game to rank ninth in the nation. Their 54 home runs lead the SoCon by 30 over the next-best team.
 
Senior center fielder Makenna Matthijs comes in batting .311 with a team-high 32 hits, 12 for extra bases. She leads the SoCon in both runs scored (27) and RBIs (26).
 
Senior second baseman Jasmine Palmer (.352, 7 HRs, 21 RBIs) ranks fifth in the league in batting average and second with a .482 on-base percentage. Junior outfielder Jordan Gontram hit her league-leading ninth home run in the series finale against Longwood, while sophomore infielder Maycin Brown (.358, 5 HRs, 18 RBIs) ranks second in the SoCon with a .672 slugging percentage.
 
Charlotte has gone 7-2 since April 1 and comes in after winning three games in a four-game weekend series at Florida Atlantic.
 
Junior catcher Bailey Van Noy is having a monster year, batting .411 with 15 doubles, nine home runs and 24 RBIs in 30 games. Senior outfielder Nicole Bowman (.347, 5 HRs, 12 RBIs) and sophomore infielder Cori Henderson (.333, 6 doubles, 2 HRs) lead a 49ers offense batting .291 as a team.
 
Two right-handers, sophomore Madelyn Wright (8-2, 2.25 ERA in 17 games) and junior Lindsey Walljasper (10-5, 2.77 ERA in 20 games), have pitched the bulk of the innings for Charlotte.
