BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - UNCG baseball delivers its second shutout win of the season this Wednesday, defeating Gardner-Webb 9-0 on the road in Boiling Springs. The Spartan pitching staff surrendered just five base runners over the course of the evening, while nine UNCG batters touched first.
The Spartans wasted no time on Wednesday, scoring a trio of runs thanks to some help from the Bulldogs' defense in the first.
Josh Madole put the leadoff man on despite striking out, reaching first on a GWU wild pitch, before
Greg Hardison and
Hogan Windish singles loaded the bases. Another wild pitch and a Bulldog defensive error put two across for the visiting Spartans, with
Sam Koruschak delivering his first hit of the night on an RBI single to make it 3-0.
UNCG was able to further expand it's lead in the third and fourth innings thanks to some quality work on the mound from starter
Brendan Collins. The right hander kept the Bulldogs hitless through his four frames of work with his lone base runner allowed coming on a walk surrendered in the first. After that base on balls, Collins retired the next 11 GWU batters to close out his time on the bump, striking out three of the 13 he faced.
Rosier delivered a single to leadoff the third, coming around to score on a groundout and back-to-back wild pitches for the Gardner-Webb starter, but it was the following offensive frame that opened things up for the visitors, with the Spartans doubling their lead in the fourth.
Dallas Callahan became the fifth Spartan to get a knock, leading things off with a single to right. The UNCG catcher's effort was followed by a
Daniel Cerda walk and a Madole hit by pitch loading the bases for the visiting side for a second time.
Hardison and Rosier's second knocks of the game added two more runs for the Spartans, with another wild pitch making the score 7-0.
Pres Cavenaugh's RBI sac fly rounded out the scoring for the inning, with UNCG taking an eight-run advantage to the fifth. The visitors added their ninth and final run of the night in the top half of the seventh, with Cerda tallying the RBI single to become the sixth UNCG batter to get a hit.
The combination of
Jacob Curry and
Jack Voigt carried the Spartan no-hitter into the seventh as the former struck out the side in inning number five. The UNCG pitching staff didn't allow a hit until two outs into the seventh inning, holding Gardner-Webb to just four knocks and a walk on the night.
UNCG's 9-0 victory gave the Spartan pitching staff its second shutout win of the season, after defeating NC A&T 23-0 earlier in the year. Nine Spartans reached first safely against Gardner-Webb on the night, with UNCG gathering its fifth midweek win of the campaign.
