SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNCG baseball were unable to come away with a win this Saturday, dropping a pair of decisions in a doubleheader at Wofford. Despite leading for the majority of game one, the Spartans were felled in an 11-10 final before taking a 5-0 loss in the following contest.
Josh Madole drove in a career-high four runs in the first leg of Saturday's doubleheader, as he and
Greg Hardison had two knocks apiece in that contest.
Game two of the Spartans' series against Wofford started very similar to the first, with Madole leading off the game with the first hit of the day. He would eventually come around to score on a Hardison single, giving UNCG a run in the first inning for a second straight game.Â
After the Terriers responded with a run of their own in the third, UNCG struck back their own blow with three runs in the fourth. Reaching on an error, Cavenaugh doubled his team's run total thanks to a
Spencer Smith RBI double, before Madole's second hit of the game drove in two more.Â
Allowing just two runs through the first five innings, UNCG was able to increase its advantage in the sixth, scoring three on a wild pitch, a bases loaded walk and a Madole sac fly.Â
Daniel Cerda delivered his second double in as many days to drive in two more Spartan base runners in the seventh before Madole once again provided the sacrifice fly to give UNCG a seven-run advantage.Â
Alex Hoppe held the Terriers to five hits over 5.0 innings while striking out four, but wouldn't receive the decision as the Terriers came back from a 10-3 deficit in the final three innings of the contest. The home team hung six in the bottom half of the seventh, thanks in part to what proved to be a costly Spartan defensive error, tying things up in the following inning. Wofford would ultimately take game one on a ninth inning RBI single, walking off their opponents for a second straight contest.
Game two was much slower for the Spartans offensively, as the side was no-hit by the Wofford starter.
Brendan Collins provided the Spartans with another great start on the mound, but after walking six, the righty's pitch count forced him off the mound after 5.2 IP. Collins allowed just two earned runs against, but a lack of run support stuck him with the loss, with the Spartans' lone baserunners of the day coming on three walks in game two.
>>> Madole's four RBI in game one were a new career-high for the first baseman, driving in five runs over the course of this weekend's series
>>> Eight of the Spartans' starting nine in game one recorded a hit, while they all touched first.
Hogan Windish went 1-for-2 at the plate but drew three of his team's nine walks
>>> Of the 11 runs allowed by the Spartans in game one, only four were earned, while only four of the 10 surrendered by the Wofford pitching staff went down as earned
