GREENSBORO, N.C. - Playing at First National Bank Field in downtown Greensboro, UNCG baseball completed the series sweep of North Carolina A&T on Tuesday, taking down the Aggies 8-2 in the final leg of the 2021 "Battle For the 'Boro" series. The contest was the fourth the Spartans have played in a pro ballpark this season, as they used a three-knock performance from
Greg Hardison and a two-run homer from
Hogan Windish to propel themselves past their crosstown rivals. 10 UNCG arms combined to hold A&T to just two runs on the night, as the Spartans moved to a 3-1 record when playing at professional venues in 2021.
Right hander
Austin Koehn will go down the Spartan starter but UNCG used three different arms before scoring their first runs of the night in the bottom of the third.
Corey Rosier and Hardison each collected their first hits of the afternoon in that frame, before starting first baseman
Sam Koruschak delivered the two-out two-RBI single to center. The Spartans doubled their lead in the fourth, with
Daniel Cerda scoring on a wild pitch in the home half. Rosier came home on yet another two-out knock, this time off the bat of Hardison. The left fielder's second hit of the day easily scored his teammate from third, with Hardison's first triple of the season going down as an RBI knock.
The lead the Spartans built in the third would hold out, making righty
Jacob Curry the pitcher of record on the night. The redshirt-junior retired his first two batters on just six pitches before allowing a single in the third at bat of the third. A&T came within a few feet of scoring their first run of the night during that frame, but an excellent relay throw from
Zack Budzik made sure the final out of the frame was made at home plate to keep the Aggies scoreless.
Budzik got it done more on just the defensive side of the ball, registering his team's first hit of the night in the second, before driving in the Spartans' fifth run on an RBI single in the fifth.
UNCG scored for a fourth straight inning while hanging three runs in the sixth. Cerda led off the frame with his third double of the past four games, eventually coming home on Rosier's second hit of the night. A
Hogan Windish home run two at bats later drove home Rosier for a third time, with the former's no-doubter over the left field wall putting the pair in a tie for a team-leading eight homers on the year.
Facing another potential shutout loss to the Spartans, the Aggies did score a pair during the seventh but were unable to mount a bigger run after
Jake Wolf stranded a pair of runners with a two-out strikeout.
Hardison tallied his third knock of the evening during the eighth, and freshman
Zack Mallia collected the first knock of his career in the seventh, but neither side would see anymore scoring for the remainder of the contest, with the final reading 8-2.
>>> Hardison led the Spartans with three hits, but Budzik and Rosier had two apiece. The trio were responsible for three of their team's seven RBI, with Rosier crossing home plate a UNCG career-high three times
>>> Windish and Rosier extended their on-base streaks to 11 and nine respectively. Windish has hit in five of his last six games, averaging .375 with five walks in that stretch
>>> Koehn and Wolf were the only two Spartan arms not to surrender a base runner on the night, as the UNCG pitching staff sprayed eight hits and three walks over the course of the night. While he's only tossed 2.1 innings on the year, Wolf is still yet to surrender a run or even a baserunner in 2021, and has struck out four of the seven batters that he's faced
