Confident Spartans Fired-Up For No. 13 Duke

ATHENS, Ga. –
The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team took their final swings Thursday morning before facing No. 13 national seed Duke at noon Friday in the Athens Region.

With the sounds of Rhianna blaring over the stadium speakers, the Spartans were impressive –as usual – as they blasted balls over the fence and into the trees. The ones that didn't leave the yard smacked against the padded wall with the ferocity of a Mike Tyson uppercut.

The confident Spartans were loose, smiling, focused, and excited during Thursday's practice inside of Jack Turner Stadium on the University of Georgia's campus. They arrived to the Peach State to do more than sight-see and take selfies.

UNCG has a quiet belief in its abilities, forged by overcoming plenty of adversity during the 2021 season. The Spartans roll into the regional with eight straight wins and triumphs in 16 of their last 17 outings.

"In 2018 when we made it to regionals, that was our goal," senior Jasmine Palmer said during a Zoom call with ESPN/ACC Network talent. "Now, our goal is to consistently get to regionals and win games here."

  • UNCG ended the season with 10 consecutive wins at home.
  • UNCG is tied for fifth in the country in home runs per game (1.82).
  • The Spartans have hit 89 homers.
  • UNCG has hit at least four homers in a game nine times.
  • UNCG has homered in eight straight games.
  • The Spartans also hit a NCAA record-tying five homers in one inning against Elon on March 10.
  • The Spartans are 16th nationally in slugging percentage (.545), 18th in scoring (6.52), 22nd in on-base percentage (.399), and 30th in doubles per game (1.57).
  • During its last 17 games, UNCG has been on another level, outscoring teams 107-40 and hit 34 home runs.
  • The Spartans have scored at least six runs in nine of their final 17 games.
  • Senior centerfielder Makenna Matthijs leads the SoCon in hits (60), runs (44) and RBIs (43).
  • Senior designated player Kayleigh Willis is second in the conference with 40 RBIs while junior catcher Delaney Cumbie is second in runs scored with 35.
  • Samantha Lagrama had the game-winning hit in two straight contests, a three-run sixth inning home run in a 4-3 win over Radford on March 24 and an eighth inning single in a 4-3 win over ETSU on March 26.
  • UNCG has scored at least three runs in an inning 49 times this season.
